Cychos Buffalo Wings

A new burger and wing joint for Southport.

Let it be known that if it were socially acceptable (and good for the waistline), we would eat fried chicken for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Burgers, wings, burgers with wings in them, just keep those tasty little goodies coming all day long.

Conveniently, Southport newbie Cychos Buffalo Wings are on hand to provide us with that exact lifestyle and for that, we are eternally grateful.

Now if you’re thinking, wait a minute guys, I’ve heard that name before, you are correct. Cychos itself is not a newbie so much, but the restaurant aspect of it is. The buffalo wing and burger dream team have been around for over four years in the form of a VERY in demand food truck. Which is where you’ve no doubt sampled their eats before.

As we said though, they are so in demand that Gold Coast locals have been hounding them for a space they can visit all the time and it’s really good to know we aren’t the only ones.

Cychos Buffalo Wings can be found in Australia Fair Metro and is the work of Cyrus Blaton and his wife Hanzel, passionate Gold Coast locals of 11 years who met as flight attendants while traversing the globe.

Which is important because not only did their travels lead them to one another, but also to the MANY delicious flavours of their world-class wings.

From Buffalo (the traditional American-style and our firm favourite) to Miso Orange – Japanese-inspired, Chinese Bourbon, Filo Adobo and Vietnamese Chicken, you can taste a whole world of buffalo wings, all from the comfort of a little side booth in our bustling CBD, Southport.

They’re all taste sensations and you should treat yourself to every single flavour. Plus, if you pay $25, you get UNLIMITED wings for one hour including French fries and rice. How many can you do?

Burger-wise, we recommend the Buffalo Chicken (obviously) because it has a deep fried buffalo chicken fillet with Cycho’s buffalo sauce, smoked cheddar cheese and coleslaw on a milk bun. SO good.

The Cycho Burger is also very yummy with a hand-pressed premium patty, grilled mushrooms, lettuce, caramelized onion, cheddar cheese and smoked spiced mayo on a milk bun. We gave both a good nudge.

If you need more sides, there’s loaded fries in four varieties and you may also eat sliders if you aren’t quite full yet.

There are a couple of beers on tap, a selection of wines and (the perfect accompaniment to any burger situation) exceptional milkshakes to wash it all down.

For dessert, deep-fried ice cream with Corn Flakes. Yes please.

From a food truck with three flavours to a stand-alone venue with some of the tastiest burgers and wings around – you’ve done good Cychos, thank you for bringing us the things we love most.

Get in there and show ‘em some love.

LOCATION: 6 Young Street, Southport

Mr PP’s Deli & Rooftop Bar

Cheese, cocktails and city views.

Apparently there’s something to be said about sipping cocktails in a semi-outdoor space with views for days and an ever-present, balmy breeze.

So much so that rooftop bars are the Gold Coast’s new drinking destination of choice and, as of tonight (November 17th), Southport’s jumped on the bandwagon.

Mr PP’s Deli & Rooftop Bar is the long-awaited venue that’s guaranteed to give the suburb a whole new lease on life thanks to the combination of everyone’s favourite things – cheese and cocktails.

Let’s start from the top. But actually the bottom. On the ground floor of the building you’ll find the deli section of the establishment, with an array of delicious meats and cheeses that will be brought together in platter form for your feasting pleasure. There’s also an old-school bar with a focus on whiskeys and quality wines. Probs gonna move in to be honest.

Up the stairs is where you’ll find the rooftop bar (shocker) complete with summery, feel good vibes and a brightly coloured “in good company” mural by local legend Claudio Kirac. The rooftop is all about cocktail jugs and tasty eats in the way of pizzas, share plates and a few fancy mains that’ll knock your socks off – we’ve got it on good authority the duck meatball hero is a party in your mouth.

All the foods can be eaten in both the bars so all you’ll need to do is decide whether you’d like to dine with a low-lit vintage vibe or in an open, airy space with bulk sunset-watching opportunities. Tough gig.

What else. The name of the place comes from Southport’s first main Postmaster who lived in the building from 1909. Philip Palmer Agnew was a poet, artist, scriptwriter and illustrator. We’re told he was a crazy character all the locals loved, who was renowned for putting on plays and drawing the world around him. And so, the bar was named after Mr PP and we reckon he would have loved it.

As will you friends. Race ya to the roof.

LOCATION: 43 Nerang Street, Southport
HOURS: Tuesday to Thursday 4pm until late and Friday and Saturday 12pm until 12am

Our sweet, sweet So-Po. There’s something we just love about Southport, maybe it’s the fact that they’ve got bulk bars and restaurants so hunger never has to enter our vocabulary again. Or maybe it’s how you can get a coffee hit and hit of golf done in half a day and then soak up those Broadwater views for the rest of it – shall we go on?

All we know is that there are so many goodies in this CBD gem we couldn’t list them all or you’d be here all day and we know you’re all about less reading and more doing! (same). Here’s our round-up of local approved must-do’s!

Grab some Asian eats at Wu Kong with peckish plates to keep you going, or a classic pub feed from The Queen’s Arms for your parmy fix. When all that eating has got you zonked, get your caffeine hit at Sens Coffee and pop into DENDY to catch the latest flicks and a moment of peace and quiet.

For Bakery Treats

No man is left behind at Made With Love who delivers on 100% vegan cakes, pies and pastries– because you know what they say, a doughnut a day keeps the doctor away…or something like that. And why should our vegans not be part of the action?!

Keeping the Euro-bakery vibes rolling is 5B2F Ciabatta, the Southport spin-off from the cult-fave Chirn Park bakehouse, slinging everything from flaky croissants and glossy danishes to ciabatta sandwiches stuffed with all the good things (hello truffle ham and cheese toastie). It’s a grab-and-go carb paradise where sourdough, dreamy pastries and show-stopping cakes are baked fresh daily – basically your daily bread, but make it boujee.

Joining the caffeine crew, but with a twist, is Yellow & Butter. Tucked neatly inside Cloud 9 Car Wash, they’ve officially upgraded your car washing experience with a side of brunch. Our advice is to start with the cheesecake!

Cheek Café serves up wholesome bites, knockout coffee and top-tier banter, all wrapped in a peachy-pink, personality-packed space. While Broadwater Café is a local fave for its stellar brews and arguably the most scenic sip spot in Southport. Coffee with a side of waterfront wow.

If you prefer your coffee topped with cold foam, or paired with a sweet treat on the side (hello, Dubai Mochi Cookie) Milestone should be at the top of your hit list.

Keeping the rooftop vibes going strong, Aviary Rooftop at Southport Sharks have an epic cocktail menu that talks a big game, and luckily for us, it doesn’t just live up to expectations – it’s even better.

Also at Southport Sharks, Kaktus Bar is your go-to for a vibrant cocktail. Yep, this place delivers a thirst-quenching margarita as you’ve never tasted. One of those (or a few), paired with live music and a lineup of tacos, and you have yourself a fiesta!

Hyde Paradiso

A beachfront, Mediterranean-inspired cocktail venue for Surfers Paradise.

The Surfers Paradise party scene is set to skyrocket in the sophistication stakes with the news that Hyde Paradiso, Australia’s first venue by renowned lifestyle brand Hyde, will swing open its’ doors on April 1st.

Taking up space at Peppers Soul Surfers Paradise, where Seaduction once lived, Hyde Paradiso is said to be the oceanfront playground the sparkly suburb is missing and, if the groups’ previous rap sheet is anything to go by, we’re in for a good time or two.

If you’re not familiar with the Hyde brand, think chic party venues in locations such as Miami, Las Vegas and LA, the likes of which draw hordes of celebrity attendees and now, we lucky Gold Coasters can get in on the action.

The fitout will incorporate a blue, white and peach colour scheme combining traditional Italian materials including terrazos and mosaic with light timbers, coastal whites and earthy neutrals offering a Mediterranean-esque vibe we already love and would like to copy every aspect of.

A standout feature of the space will be the Hyde Paradiso Sgroppino Room, which can be used as a private dining space, including a dedicated bartender serving a range of signature Sgroppinos – an Italian cocktail traditionally made with sorbet, Prosecco and Limoncello – be still our hearts.

The drinks list will make your life infinitely better, curated by Tim Philips- Johansson, a bartender who brings 17 years of experience to Hyde Paradiso and will soon be your new favourite guy. The focus, as is Hyde’s way, will be on fun, flavour-filled tipples perfect for balmy afternoons overlooking the ocean or, a night of dancing and bulk drink sampling with the crew.

The food menu is all about sharing with influences from Europe and the US plus, of course the freshness of coastal-inspired eats. One of our favourite dishes in the world, Spanakopita, will make an appearance as will sumac squid and Heirloom tomato with whipped feta (to name a few select treats). There’ll also be fresh, delicious salads and lots of freshly made dips including another one of our fave dishes, Taramosalata. So good.

Executive Chef Joel Bryant, formerly of local fave Oskars on Burleigh, will head up the Hyde Paradiso team bringing a menu inspired by his travels (and 20 years of experience) with the bold flavours of Greece, Turkey, Italy and Morocco and please hurry up and open now.

So, Gold Coasters, it seems we’re in for a treat.

The relaxed, beachfront space seems certain to evoke nostalgic memories of summers spent on faraway Coasts but right here in our very own backyard.

If stunning Sunday sessions, long lunches and lively social scenes are your thing, mark April 1st in your diaries and prepare yourself for the game-changer that is Hyde Paradiso.

Stay tuned for more information.
