We’ve got the scoop…on the best scoop in town!

Mermaid’s new gelato shop will make you melt.

Gelato lovers, stay cool and listen up coz you’re about to live the ‘cream. The Gold Coast just got served – soft served, with a brand spanking new gelateria so good you’ll love it un-cone-ditionally.

Markeri Street in Mermaid is a whole lot sweeter after La Macelleria opened its doors and we could srsly ‘waffle’ on about this legenDAIRY place all day long.

Founded by dynamic duo and gelato buffs Steve and Carolyn OShea, their passion for their craft is palatable, we mean, palpable.

Delivering pure sensory bliss, they whip up their artisanal gelato daily using top-notch Italian gear right before your eyes.

To keep their gelato primo, it is stored the OG way, in a sleek Pozzetti.

This is widely regarded as the best way to preserve gelato, and anything that sounds like a fancy set of wheels is a-okay with us.

Firm believers that quality is determined by your taste buds, not your peepers, the authentic, fresh taste is the ‘cream’ of the crop.

Brought to life aesthetically by Carolyn and Jackson Emblem from Queensland Coast Constructions, walking into La Macelleria is like stepping into a Gelateria straight outta Bologna.

The intricate terrazzo benchtop, a work of art in itself, oozes elegance and style.

If you’re a fan of outdoor eating and duh, we’re Gold Coasters, there are four tables with comfy seating inviting you to chillax in the sunshine.

Or, if funky stools inside with the air-con blasting is more your cup of gelato shake (which they also serve), you ‘cone’ do that too!

Our vote goes to their signature flavours bacio and pistachio, which we prefer to eat like Reese – Witherspoon (bum bum tss).

The gelato shakes mentioned are also shout-out worthy, and their pure Italian espresso is a ‘cream come true’ for those in need of a caffeine kick.

Plus, if you’re feeling a bit DIY with your gelato, their upcoming workshops will teach the theoretical principles with practical exercises on machines in their unique Laboratorio Del Gelato. Cool!

With 23 years in the industry owning and running Italian restaurants, Steve certainly knows how his shiz about the biz.

And when it comes to location, Steve and Carolyn did their due diligence securing digs that place them firmly in the ‘cream team’ of GC hospitality power players.

The area boasts a bustling environment, making it the perfect melting pot for locals and visitors alike.

They’re all about community, excited to immerse themselves in the local scene, create new jobs, and support nearby clubs and schools through sponsorship activities.

Now BrisVegas peeps may recognise the La Macelleria name and rightly so, with two mates (both named Mateo) first bringing the concept to life with stores in Tenerife, West End, and Woolloongabba.

Lucky for us, the OShea’s decided to bring “‘the Mateos’” brainchild to our ‘hood, with plans to expand La Macelleria’s footprint in other GC burbs.

So let’s all say a big cone-gratulations to La Macelleria Mermaid Waters, which has us all chanting “you scream, I scream, we all scream GELATO”.

Mermaid’s paw-some new coffee spot

Great cups and cute pups aplenty at Arketà Cafe.

PERMANENTLY CLOSED

Whether you prefer to start your day with a green smoothie, a (non-negotiable) triple shot iced latte or a big ‘ol stack of buttermilk pancakes – when a hip new coffee haunt inserts itself in your neck of the woods, mornings just feel that little bit brighter.

This is especially true for Gold Coasters whose BFFs are of the four-legged variety, with Mermaid’s new pup-friendly spot Arketà Cafe set to be a firm favourite among foodies and furry friends alike.

Arketà Cafe, Mermaid Waters (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)

Combining their passion for good food and cute canines, partners Iszaya and Keeley were inspired to create a spot for central locals to perch up with their pooch in tow for slow sun-soaked brunches while also offering tasty, quick bites for those on the go.

Keeley brings her background in owning and operating cafes to the table, with Mermaid Waters being the obvious choice for the duo to set up shop.

“It is our local area where we live and we felt it was lacking a dog friendly cafe with an amazing experience and food and friendly staff” owner Iszaya adds.

There’s also set to be a whole lot more babycinos on the horizon, with the duo hustling extra hard to get the Arketà doors open before they welcome their next addition, a new baby in the coming weeks.

They’ve certainly got plenty on their plates (and spoiler alert: we’re very happy to report we can say the same about the eats).

The direction for the Arketà fit out was headed by Keeley and embodies that welcoming, modern industrial cafe vibe we can never get enough of.

Chic square tiles bedeck the wraparound counter, while the blush and cream combo will always get a yes from us.

Polished concrete flooring, black seating and lofty ceilings bring all the industrial drama with greenery and timber inclusions to bring a welcoming warmth to the space.

Meanwhile, the alfresco seating offers a prime pozzy for lucky locals to linger a little longer and soak up some rays.

Arketà Cafe, Mermaid Waters (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)

An equally enticing menu offers all the cafe style suspects – we spy with our little açaí, a full selection of raw treats, fresh juices, smoothies (the La Luna looks especially lit), and açaí on tap for your daily nutrient hit, obvi.

Though lbh, brunch is what we’re really here for, and Arketà delivers.

On high rotation will be the hash avo, whipped feta, golden hash browns, avo, poached eggs, and the rightful breakfast of champions – the breakfast loaded burger for your fried egg, bacon, wilted spinach cheese and hollandaise fix all wrapped up in one glorious bun.

Arketà Cafe, Mermaid Waters (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)
Arketà Cafe, Mermaid Waters (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)

The pièce de résistance though, might just be the big brekkie that’s got to be one of the most stacked on the Coast.

The Arketà The Lot, toasted turkish loaded with hollandaise laden poached eggs, avo, hashies, sausages, bacon, sautéed baby spinach and grilled tomato… aaand they’re not done yet: a swirl of açaí topped granola on the side to top it all off.

Food sweats, take the wheel.

Of course, our furry friends need not spend the whole time giving us puppy dog eyes, with Arketà is punching out the pupuccinos and more goodies from the dedicated doggo menu.

Because while we may not deserve dogs, the goodest boys and girls definitely deserve all the treats.

Then came Rafiki By The Park, thanks to the screaming success of the seaside original. That’s right, Gold Coasters… we’ve been blessed with two Rafikis, and honestly, we deserve it.

Both venues serve slurp-worthy smoothies, icy matcha, cheeky (and famous) toasties, house-made yoghurt cups piled with seasonal fruit and crunchy granola, and their cult-status African Avo Toast.
