There are very few things in the world better than coffee but the experience of consuming the magical liquid can of course be enhanced.
How can it be better I hear you ask? Well, by the location at which you’re consuming it for one thing and drinking more than one cup at a time for another. And let’s be honest, coffee with a view of the beach or the bush should be mandatory when you’re living on the Gold Coast!
Black Dingo Cafe
Tucked beneath the iconic lighthouse, find Coolangatta’s latest lurking mere meters from where sand meets sea, overlooking Point Danger’s sweeping outlook. Creating a venue that ‘celebrates the beauty of the ocean and the joy of sharing it with loved ones’, there’s certainly more to Black Dingo than meets the tastebuds – though the allure of an especially tantalising all-day eats selection sure won’t hurt the cause in the slightest!

Café Catalina
Found on the Broadwater up Southport way, Café Catalina overlooks well, the Broadwater and all the fancy yachts you can never afford. They also have tasty eats and you can take your doggo for a puppychino if that’s his/her thing.

Sandbar
Overlooking Surfers Paradise beach and with abundant people watching opportunities, Sandbar is the perfect spot for a coffee or two. In the last year, they’ve had quite the revamp so you can go from breaky to lunch and from coffee to cocktails.

Custard Canteen
Custard Canteen delivers on epic coffee right by one of the Coast’s most beautiful beaches – Tallebudgera Creek. They’re pet friendly so you can take your pooch for a long walk on the beach post-caffeine fix and if you’re craving a sweet treat, you can’t go past their iconic Portuguese Tarts.

Dune Café
Watch the paddleboarders cruise by on Currumbin Creek at hidden paradise Dune Café. It’s nestled inside the park (which is epic by the way) and close to the dog beach and with delicious breakfasts and all the laidback vibes, it’s the perfect spot for a coffee or three.

Neptune Kiosk
Tallebudgera Creek’s resident coffee slinger, Neptune Kiosk – recently unveiled its cheery new spruce up to go with the impeccable vibes Talle’s idyllic inlet dishes up daily. Once again churning out Marvell Street coffee, croissants AND hot cinny donuts from its sunshine-y new facadem it’s a triumphant return of the oh-so-convenient caffeine and treat fix creek-goers have grown rather fond of.

Rafiki
It’s earned its status as an institution for good reason – locals can’t get enough of Rafiki. Pooch friendly, ripper coffee (and a cookie on the side, yes please) but it’s also home to their flavour bomb seasoning so you can take home a little taste of the good life.

MADE
Fronting the corner of Musgrave & Miles St, the cosy 25-pax venue offers a mix of indoor and kerbside seating for Kirra’s peckish perambulators. Frequents whom the cafe gods are looking favourably down upon can either nab a table, or perch up at the bar and watch the world go by in front of the breezy bifold windows which span one wall.

The Salt Mill
Home of the most ridiculous acai bowl selection, Salt Mill serves up some of the best coffees around while also being just a hop, skip and a jump from Currumbin Beach. It’s a little space with a whole lot of soul and it’s extremely loved by those who live close by and visitors from further suburbs.

Tarte Beach House
One of the newer kids on the block, Tarte Beach House has brought the goods from Tarte Burleigh in the Creekside spot on Currumbin Alley. The same brew you know and love but with one of the best views on the Coast, why not pop off for a paddle board after before coming back for a cheeky refuel after – we can never say no to a strawberry muffin top.

Kinship
Currumbin can’t stop delivering the goods with this beachfront beauty. You’ll find Kinship right by Currumbin SLSC pumping out coffees until 2pm, with the whole of Currumbin Beach at your feet it’s the perfect spot to take the fam and let the kids run loose.

The Galley Café, Boatworks
We’ll forgive you for missing this hidden gem, The Galley Café is the perfect spot for a brew for you Northern Gold Coasters. The marine inspired fit out is a hit for boaties and the kids love it too, bring the fam and keep watch as the yachts cruise through the river all day long.

26 & Sunny
Sip away on your coffee right on the beachfront at 26 & Sunny, nestled below The Langham it’s the perfect coffee pitstop for your early morning beach walk. They’ve also got epic eats if you’re craving a bite, bonus point for it being the ultimate spot to dog on the boardwalk watch if you’re sans furry friend.

Bumbles
If you haven’t been to Bumbles, then where have you been? Budds Beach has long been a locals secret but there’s good reason why Gold Coasters have been flocking to this hot spot for 10+ years. Flying Bean Café
If you’re looking for a different kind of view, Flying Bean Café is the place with sweeping views of the hinterland all the way through to the Gold Coast. Kirra Smith, is a commercial, branding, and product photographer based on the Gold Coast, passionate about storytelling and capturing moments that connect with people. With a love for light, nature and the ocean, she brings creativity and authenticity to every project.
Starting her career in PR, Kirra worked with brands like FIJI Water and Green & Blacks, before transitioning to photography while working at Inside Gold Coast.
Over the past five years, she’s worked with major clients from Tourism Australia to Suncorp, and many more, telling powerful stories through her lens. Her focus is always on creating images that evoke emotion and build meaningful connections.

How long have you been a Gold Coast local?
I’ve been a Gold Coast local for 14 years, I moved here from Sydney to do a Masters of Journalism at Griffith and fell in love.
What do you love the most about the Gold Coast?
I love how naturally beautiful the Coast is, the mix of stunning beaches and mountains can’t be beaten but besides that I love out creative culture. People who aren’t immersed in it often think it doesn’t exist but over the past eight or so years particularly we’ve grown so much in terms of cultural events, people doing amazing things in the arts and culinary spaces and everyone in those areas is so supportive of one another, I don’t think you get that very often.
Tell us a little bit about yourself (both personally and professionally).
I grew up in Tamworth in NSW and moved to Wollongong for University in 2004. I’ve always been such a beach girl but going home to the country and those big open spaces is always so soothing. After Uni I worked in PR in Sydney and once I moved to the Coast I worked in a few different media roles, including print magazines which I loved so much. Now I live in Palm Beach with my Staffy Jagger. I love art and fashion, good food and travelling and I live a pretty relaxed life that I adore and feel so lucky to have created.
What initially sparked your passion for photography?
I’ve always loved taking photos and often had a camera by my side but it wasn’t until I started as a writer for Inside Gold Coast and had to go out to restaurants to take photos of food that I fell in love with it (and with food). I think it was about the challenge of learning something I had no idea about and also the ways you can create stories through images and just make really weird concepts look cool with a camera. I love that there’s always something new to learn or try.
What were some of the biggest lessons you learned in those early days
There have been so many lessons! I think early on it was about not letting people take advantage of me and being brave enough to charge enough money for my work. Starting and maintaining a photography business has been the biggest challenge I’ve ever experienced, the learning curves have been steep but it’s also been incredible to see it grow. These days the lessons revolve more around boundaries, being respectful of my own time allowing myself to be proud of what I’ve built instead of always wanting more.
How would you describe your photography style?
I think I have quite an editorial style of photography, that storytelling element coming through, which maybe comes from being a writer first. People often say they like that my photos look natural and not overly edited which is absolutely what I want to put out there. I like deep colours but to keep things looking realistic.
What’s been the most memorable photoshoot of your career so far?
There have been so many, I’ve been really lucky but one that I absolutely loved was shooting in Noosa with a company who offer curated tours with a well-known local guide. We travelled around Noosa with Matt Golinski visiting eco-friendly farms, wineries and restaurants and learning about local produce. Had a helicopter ride over the coastline at sunset. It was a pinch-me moment for three days! I shot some images for i love linen that went into Real Living magazine a couple of years ago too, that was so exciting.
What advice would you give to aspiring photographers wanting to break into the industry?
I think ask people questions and learn as much as possible. So many more experienced photographers helped me in the early days and it was invaluable. I try to do the same when I can now and I also offer mentoring sessions which I absolutely love. It seems like a saturated market but if you love it enough, find your style and what you love to shoot and practice as much as you can. Working for free if you want to get your portfolio built and start reaching out to people. Everyone had to start somewhere and people are happy to help more often than not.
What’s next for you—any exciting projects or goals in the works?
I’m talking with a big Australian business about a shoot at the moment which will be the biggest one I’ve done so far so that’s super exciting! I’ve got a few resources in the works for people who want to start a photography business and then some non-photography related goals around writing and creating a product based business. I always have so many things I want to do but I really need to learn to focus on one thing at a time.

How do you choose to spend your days off?
I walk my dog in the morning, go to the gym and then usually to Talle Creek for a swim. Read a book or catch up with a girlfriend and walk my dog again in the afternoon. Less is more for me on days off!
