Chic, timeless and anything but boring; this Autumn, the Gold Coast is locking in and taking neutrals to new heights in the most stylish way possible!

As we embrace the changing seasons, it’s the perfect time to delve into the unsung heroes of our wardrobes: neutrals. These versatile shades provide a solid foundation for many outfits and gives you an air of sophistication.

So, what exactly is the significance of neutrals and how do we incorporate them into your wardrobe without the risk of becoming boring?

Neutral colours in fashion are versatile, muted shades that lack strong chromatic content, serving as the foundation for a wardrobe. Key neutrals include black, white, navy, grey, beige, tan, camel, and brown. The foundational shades allow for easy mixing, matching, and pairing with secondary colours.

Simple touches such as contrasting fabrics, proportional play, layering shades, well placed accessories, and denim bases,  allows neutrals to hold that main character energy without trying too hard.

To add a touch of personality and to avoid falling into a forgettable fashion moment, let’s expand on our visual cues and create creative impact!

Here are 5 styling tips to avoid looking boring in neutrals:

(L-R) Kookai Palermo Lace Mini Skirt $160, Kookai Jac Top $80, Scanlan Theodore Knit Tie Shirt $350, Italian Textured Trouser $700, The Athos Trapeze $800, Witchery Mindy Mesh Flats $159, Cotton Oxford Shirt $59.95, Soft Curve Jeans $179.95, Pinstripe Slim Blazer $299 (images supplied)

Layering shades

For a subtle yet dreamy look, selecting variations of pieces from the same colour family creates sophistication and cohesion, from head-to-toe. Choose full monochrome with fine hardware, and enough skin present to break up the silhouette, or opt for a fusion of lighter and heavier tones to create surprising and non-traditional dimension.

(L-R)Decjuba Carmen Tailored Blazer $139.95, Lennon Denim Jort $109.95, Universal Store Rusty Flip Mommy Low Rise Tapeless Denim Jean $139.99, Lioness Olsen Knit $89, Boogie Sunglass $35 (images supplied)

Use denim as a base

The easiest material to match within your wardrobe is denim. But to achieve creative interest, it requires a pairing of personality. Try a dark and sharper neutral for evening time such as a black blazer,  pump heels. For day, a jersey shirt and statement sunglasses that pull a tone your top, bag and footwear will tie the outfit together.

(L-R) Bec & Bridge Set - Alaric Cropped Jacket $450 and Alaric Bloomers $240, Ksubi Barrel Jean Carpenter Sierra Tan $329, Academy Ls Polo Shirt Tan Stripe $239.95, Dissh Romy Black Barrel Leg Tailored Pant $159.99 (images supplied)

Play with proportions

Create balance and find your sweet spot between the structure and flow of your look. If you’re liking the higher neck, shoulder heavy jackets in store this Autumn, pair with a shorter, more fitted bottom like a mini skirt or short shorts. Alternatively, baggy cargo pants or barrel jeans paired with a more fitted or midriff top will create a shapely silhouette. Cinch your waist with a fine or statement belt in a deeper neutral colour for a more defined style.

Smart use of accessories

Subtle or striking, the choice is yours! Accessorising neutrals is the perfect way to add character and individuality to your outfit. A textured boot such as snakeskin works well with neutrals, muted toned jewels and bedazzled handbags instantly elevate a neutral look; adding points of interest that may have previous been lacking.

Mix fabric prints & textures

Infuse depth and drama with textured and print elements, making even the most understated hues feel rich and refined. Introducing the likes of plaid variations, mesh, lace, corduroy and more, offer balanced proportions to a flatter base. A cooler neutral palette can often be limited, so adding texture can do the heavy lifting whilst looking far from boring.

2026 Colour Palette Guide

Whilst an elevated capsule wardrobe will take you so far, infusing aptly placed shades into your fashion rotation is easiest way to inject joy and personality into any look.

In 2026, fashion shifts from the “quiet luxury” neutrals of previous years, toward a palette of renewal and high-contrast expression. The year is defined by a “hard reset” with airy whites, grounded by deep earthy tones and punctuated by modern calmness, mood-boosting shades.

Pantone have named ‘Cloud Dancer’ as its Colour of the Year for 2026. With this soft and natural white, it seems 2026 will start on a hard reset, on a blank page some could say.

Joining the trending colours are pretty pastels, an earthy take on khaki, and serene and sophisticated shades. It’s clear that more maximalist tones are set to take centre stage in this year’s fashion stakes.

A fresh colour palette built for a year that wants revitalisation rather than reinvention!

5 colour trends dominating the fashion scene in 2026:

Cloud Dancer White

This soft white shade offers a collective move toward simplicity, stillness and reflection.
It’s not a stark white, it’s specifically a natural shade of white. Most powerfully worn as a head-to-toe monochrome look and beautifully paired with gold hardware.

Transformative Teal

Transformative teal is set to turn heads this year, with its reflection of nature and sustainability in fashion. Treat it like a modern neutral and wear it as a stand-alone show stopper, or inject elegance with metallic accessories. Choose deeper tones for a more conservative and professional look or combine with bolder colours for a fashionable statement.

Dreamy Lavender

Primed to make a comeback this year, the optimistic shade, Dreamy Lavender, conveys a blend of nostalgia, retro glamour; and modern calmness. Looking forward to Autum/Winter months, pair a lavender layer with a grounding tone such as deep chocolate and consider it in fabrics like wool and silk with glamours jewels.

Caramel Khaki

Considered a staple “quiet luxury” colour that offers a more refined, warm alternative to traditional beige or crisp neutrals; caramel khaki is popular for both casual and professional wear.
It is a trend replacement of monotone blacks in modern, chic wardrobes and worn beautifully in tailored pieces like trousers and trench coats.

Candy Pink

This vibrant and unapologetically, youthful shade is anything but subtle. While traditionally a summer staple, candy pink is also emerging as a soft statement for Winter 2026. Wear it preppy – with collars, crisp pleats and a headband; or elevate elegance with lace trims, slip dresses and statement jewellery.

When it comes to finding the perfect shirt – comfort, breathability and a relaxed style top the list for Gold Coasters.

But how does one avoid looking “sloppy” or like they haven’t made an effort if they reach for an oversized shirt?  Worn correctly, the piece will add an air of effortless edge, lived in ease and create overall balance to one’s outfit.

Let’s not make ourselves smaller this Spring/Summer!

But first, let’s learn how to style an oversized shirt this season:

(L-R) Elce Reverie shirt sorbet stripe $180, Lido Tablescape Oversized Tee $79.95 (images supplied)

WITH BIKE PANTS

Stylist Tip
Pair with sneakers and a cap for a more street style vibe, or pair with thongs and sunglasses for hot girl summer vibes.

If you’re happy to reveal your mid-section, tuck some of the shirt under your bra.

AS PART OF A MATCHING SET

Stylist Tip
To avoid looking like you’re wearing pyjamas, rolled long sleeves up to fore arms, loosely tuck one side of the shirt in; and make sure some top buttons are opened to expose skin on the chest.

Colour-matched accessories finish the look nicely.

WITH A MAXI SKIRT

Stylist Tip
Create some balance by clashing masculine and feminine pieces with this look.

Opt for a fun, bright graphic tee and beaded necklace for some personality, or create the effect of wearing a dress by selecting a monochrome choice and adding some heels.

OVER SWIM

Stylist Tip
The perfect holiday staple to wear day in, day out, no matter which way it’s styled. For a comfy yet intentional look, throw a tee over that pulls from the colour of your bikinis. A colourful, oversized shirt can be buttoned or unbuttoned and paired with a beach bag some slides and worn straight to the beach bar.
