Peak hour at a coffee shop is not for the faint of heart. People are rushing off to work, hustling for that first cup, desperate for a caffeine hit before diving into the daily grind. As a barista, it’s hard not to absorb that chaotic energy, but Relaxed Espresso in Mermaid Beach flips the script. Here, the goal is simple: make you smile before you start your day.
Owned by Josh Key, a hospitality heavyweight with a decade of experience at spots like Paddock, Bam Bam, Palm Springs, Stone Studio, Mylk Well, Juniors and Mercado, Relaxed Espresso is the kind of place that makes you want to linger just a little longer.

Josh didn’t just stumble into cafe ownership, he’s been brewing it for years. “It was in my five-year plan to open my own coffee shop where people can experience good quality coffee in a unique space.”
And sometimes life hits the fast-forward button. A friend who was finishing their lease at this very spot sent Josh the real estate number, and a week later, he had the keys in hand.

Everything else just fell into place, from organising builders to designing the space. With help from Josh Bailey of Studio Build, the duo created a spot that’s clean, simple and brimming with personality.
Step inside, and the first thing you’ll notice is the vibe. A long concrete bench runs the length of one wall, facing two compact booths on the other, while framed black-and-white prints make the space effortlessly cool. The sound system hums with carefully curated tunes, creating the perfect backdrop for a lazy morning or an early afternoon pick-me-up.

The star of the show is the coffee. Josh brews with beans from his mate Hunter at Therefore Coffee Roasters. Whether you’re a fan of a strong espresso or a silky flat white, Relaxed Espresso delivers every time. And if you’re craving something a little sweeter, the Chocolate Coconut Iced Long Black is a must-try.
But let’s talk toasties. Josh’s menu is small but mighty, featuring ever-changing creations that keep locals coming back for more. From a classic ham and cheese to inventive combos like chorizo, cheese, basil and chilli jam, or shredded chicken with avo and cheese, there’s always something new to tempt your taste buds.

Pastries, including buttery croissants, all come from the much-loved bakers at The Bread Social, matching the care poured into every cup.
For Josh, the joy isn’t just in making coffee, it’s in the connection. “I love that people come specifically to me for coffee, and I get to make that person an experience. I want everyone to leave with a smile.”
It’s the Gold Coast’s reminder that great coffee is more than just a caffeine hit, it’s about keeping it real before the rat race.
