Scoop, there it is

Toucan Tango lands in Nobby Beach.

Grab your sunnies, your besties and maybe a bib, because Toucan Tango has officially landed in Nobby Beach and things are about to get messy (in the tastiest way possible). Hailing from South Australia where it’s already a bit of a big deal, this dessert bar has now flung open its very first Queensland doors, and spoiler: we’re obsessed.

We’re talking acai bowls the size of your head, frozen custard that’ll have you questioning your life choices (in a good way), and coffee so good your regular barista might file for abandonment. If that sounds like your kind of vibe, congrats. You’ve found your spiritual dessert home.

Let’s set the scene: neon signs, pink flamingo vibes, touchably textured walls and the unmistakable scent of vanilla custard wafting through the air. If you didn’t have cravings before, you do now. The place is playful, punchy, and perfectly situated just off the Gold Coast Highway, occupying the former Sparrow Coffee space.

It’s giving funky milk bar with a Brazilian-acai twist. And yes, you will want to take a photo of every single item you order. This place is Instagram heaven with a cherry on top (literally, if you’re getting the fro-custard sundae).

Now. The food. (Deep breath.)

Toucan Tango, Nobby Beach (Image: © 2025 Inside Gold Coast)

The acai bowls? Stacked high like edible art installations. We’re talking Nutella drizzles, fat strawberries, granola crunch, peanut butter blobs, and frozen fruit that tastes like health but in a really sexy way.

The fro-custard? Rude. In the best way. Rich, silky, and smoother than your ex’s apology text. You can get it vanilla, chocolate or twist-style with next-level toppings like Milo crumble, fairy floss, Nutella, and dreams. (Actual dreams. You’ll see.)

And if that wasn’t enough, Toucan Tango has joined forces with Blackboard Coffee, so your daily caffeine hit is also sorted. Order it straight, or get a little freaky with the Dirty Toucan, espresso poured over frozen custard. It’s unhinged. We love it.

Feeling extra? There are waffles. Donut fries. Loaded sundaes. Acai smoothies. Toasted banana bread that slaps harder than your 3pm sugar craving. Basically, it’s the dessert equivalent of Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour, loud, proud, and flawless.

Whether you’re rolling in with sandy feet, chasing a dopamine hit on your lunch break, or just here for the ‘Gram, Toucan Tango is the glow-up your sweet tooth’s been waiting for. Everything is made fresh, so while you wait (like four mins, chill), soak in the tropical fit-out, prep your Instagram caption, and try to avoid getting Nutella in your fringe. Or don’t. No judgement.

Franc(ly) my dear, we dough give a damn

Cult fave pizza slinger Franc Jrs comes to Nobby Beach.

No Gold Coasters, your eyes ‘dough’ not deceive you – at long last, the local legends behind famed pizza joints Franc Jrs and Francie’s are slinging their signature slice from a brand new location in Nobby Beach.

The newest eat-in iteration for the Franc fam – an old school vibing pizzeria – is packed with plenty of soul, promising that same trademark, ‘good, honest Italian food’ fans have long been smitten with.

Franc Jrs, Nobby Beach (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)
Franc Jrs, Nobby Beach (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

Fromage fiends can settle in for their Franc fix – with laidback vibes alongside cult fave Classic pizzas, crisp, Detroit style deep-dish pies, and frozen Margi’s.

With a lineage that can be traced back to 1996, the Francie’s origin story is fascinating, rich – and similar to the effects of a few too many frozen Marg’s – a little fuzzy around the edges.

An operation now run by Anthony Pattinson, Claudia Pattinson, James Young and Carlos Lara – the charming, 60pax Coolangatta neighbourhood pizza joint known as Francie’s was born way back in an era when, along with pizza, Anthony counted Baywatch and RnB among his great loves.

Franc Jrs, Nobby Beach (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

The humble spot with a shoebox-vibing kitchen was soon overwhelmed by its own success – by year two they were averaging 150 peckish patrons a night – a number that blew out to 250-300 punters in the years that followed, a frenetic pace that they couldn’t maintain.

Ultimately opting to close the door on Francie’s (cue first crush levels of heartbreak), another opened in the form of Franc Jrs, the compact and casual takeaway style little bro.

When it came to delivering a new and improved restaurant offering, the challenge was retaining the charm, while scaling up and refining the offering to meet demand.

Franc Jrs, Nobby Beach (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

The new venue is a 60 seater with indoor and outdoor tables, opting for counter service to streamline the experience.

Complete with mob movie vibing mood lighting, red leather and wood finishes aplenty, the interior fit out is a throwback to the classic, 1940’s Italian American style restaurant.

Franc Jrs Famous Pizzeria, Nobby Beach (image by Ben Trueman)

The result is a nostalgic feeling Anthony likens to the 90’s rite of passage – hitting up the local salad bar, “like Pizza Hut’s all you can eat, only really, really good”, he adds.

Anthony’s life-long passion for slinging ‘pies’ – is immediately apparent in the drool-worthy menu.

The offering is split into three types – Traditional 13-inch ‘Francies classics’, 16-inch cheese pies and square, Sicilian ‘Detroit style’ pizzas, as well as a full vegan selection to boot.

Now pizza, along with a sneaky pun or three, is certainly something we’re no stranger to – with catchy monikers such as Francie’s Classic, ‘Sage Against the Machine’ made with fresh fior di latte, roasted mushrooms, pancetta, sage & pecorino, only further fuelling our obsession.

Fans of the Franc Jrs Signature – the loaded and crispy edged, Sicilian style slice – can get amongst Tomato, made with roasted cherry tomatoes, confit garlic, whipped lemon ricotta & chilli sauce or the cheese-packed White Stripe, topped with hot honey.

Franc Jrs, Nobby Beach (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

And with the calibre of slice selection the Franc Jrs crew is slinging, we certainly wouldn’t blame anyone struggling to choose.

But if the fan following for these pizza purveyors is anything to go by – satisfaction is a sure thing (and a carb coma).

16 reasons locals love Nobbys Beach

Art, bars and plenty of heart.

Tayta Nikkei Restaurant & Bar, Nobby Beach (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)
Tayta Nikkei Restaurant & Bar, Nobby Beach (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)

We’ve lost count of all of the best beachside spots on the Coast where you can eat, drink and shop your little heart away, but one of the ol’ favourites has had a comeback and we’re all here for it.

Nobby’s is well and truly in its slay era and to be honest, we can’t get enough. Locals have loved the beachside suburb forever and to be fair, so have we, but there’s been a surge of seriously epic new venues that have made us fall in love all over again.

We’ve taken the task of trying out the 16 reasons why locals can’t get enough of Nobby’s – you’re welcome – so you can see for yourself what all the fuss is about.

The Oxley, Nobby Beach (image supplied By Ablo)

The Oxley 1823
You’ve no doubt seen it pretty much everywhere (guilty), but have you actually visited The Oxley yet? It’s been one of Nobby’s most anticipated new arrivals for as long as we can remember, and we think it’s safe to say now it’s well and truly living up to expectations. They’ve got brekky and lunch covered with the crew at Sunkist, coffee on tap at Buoy and everything you need from groceries, fresh meats and seafood, flowers and made to order juices covered at The Oxley Village Grocer, Butcher and Sub Station. A little birdy also told us there are even more goodies opening a little later this year, so watch this space.

Holliday Coffee
Good vibes, great coffee and a seriously strong jaffle game(!!) – what’s not to love about Holliday? No seriously, our caffeine addiction is being single handedly fuelled by these guys. It’s pretty much always buzzing – what is always a good sign if you ask us. Follow the smell of the freshly ground coffee beans, grab a seat outside (our personal favourite spot) and spoilt yourself with a little treaty. Go on, you’ve earned it.

Franc Jrs
Okay big call but this may just be one of the best pizza joints on the Gold Coast and Franc-ly, it’s about time they spread the love to other parts of the city because why should Coolangatta have all the fun? The menu has all the signatures from the Cooly store and you can choose to eat in and soak up the vibes or grab and go – the perfect addition to a picnic on the beach if you ask us. Our favourite part of ordering to-go? Sipping on a cheeky frozen marg while you wait.

Alfred’s Apartment
Mermaid’s loss is Nobby’s gain because you best believe we’ve been living at Alfred’s since the OG started calling its new address home. Still the same vibe you love from the original Alfred’s, the space now has a schmick industrial fit out, ripper coffee and, of course, all the merch that we know you can’t get enough of. If you’re off the coffee train you’ll want to get around their viral strawberry matcha.
Where: 2225 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach

Fosters Bakery
No one does pies or baked goods quite like Foster’s Bakery, they’re famous for a reason and known for delivering that classic bakery feel of yesteryear. The ultimate spot for a pie (you know you love them) or a jam donut loaded with sugary goodness, we’re nostalgic just thinking about it.

Tropic Vice
This place is a VIBE. The sun-lit rooftop is the perfect setting to sip on signature cocktails & graze on a unique “Florribean” inspired menu, combining flavours of the Caribbean and South America. The space was stylishly updated last year, still paying homage to the iconic Palm Springs and Miami influence, it’s one of those spots you just want to sip and stay all day.

About a Girl
One of our favourite little gems in Nobby’s is of course, About a Girl boutique. They’ve got the perfect mix of wardrobe staples and current trending pieces, they’ve got gorgeous linen sets, minis, maxis and so much more for every occasion, as well as a curated selection of hand-picked homewares you didn’t know you absolutely need.

Mexicali
You had us at Mexican. We challenge you to find someone who doesn’t love a good Mexican feed… Go on, we’ll wait. Calling Nobby’s home for probably longer than most of us have, Mexicali never fails to bring the vibes (and the bevs) all year long. Once you make your way upstairs it’s seriously like entering the ultimate secret spot, if you close your eyes for a second it’s almost like you’re actually in Tulum. Once you’ve knocked back a few tacos and cocktails, don’t forget to snap the iconic stair shot as you exit – you know what we’re talking about, don’t lie.

Now there’s a decent dose of Japanese going around our hood, but we can never get enough. Have any of these sushi bars or poke bowl dreamboats failed us? The answer is a hard no. Okazu is no exception, this convenient grab and go spot featuring Donburi, Okonomiyaki and Sushi Rolls is as fresh as it is delicious and it has us coming back every day.

SOMM Wine Store
Yeah we’ve talked a lot about foody joints (how unlike us – said no-one ever) but there is absolutely no denying that SOMM Wine store is a firm local favourite of the vino variety. SOMM (aka us) might even say it’s the only place you should be exploring to find your favourite drop.  Owned by husband and wife duo Joe and Natalie, their backstory is reflected in the carefully curated wines begging to occupy real estate at your next dinner party. Specialising in boutique wineries, their wine experts will help you find a winner every time.

That mural
Speaking of Mexicali and epic art (and no, we’re not talking about the food this time), a much-loved part of the Nobbys highway strip is the eye-catching mural adorning one side of the restaurant in all its bright-hued glory. Designed and painted by local legend Luke Day, the colourful creation and all its pinky bluey goodness is THE spot to snap the most aesthetic insta shot you could wish for. Say cheese…or churros!

The 13 best acai bowls on the Gold Coast

Bowl’d claim we know, but trust us.

Nautical Bowls (image supplied)
Nautical Bowls (image supplied)

After a long day in the surf, there is nothing we want more than an ice-cold acai bowl to cool down and refuel. I guess you could say it’s an acai for sore eyes – see what we did there?

Okay, but does anyone really remember life before acai? That delicious little berry from the Amazon has been a breakfast, lunch and snack staple for Gold Coasters for years and because we take our jobs very seriously, we’ve done the heavy lifting (see: eating) so that you can kick back and chow down. Don’t mind us while we add acai aficionado to our resumé.

Oakberry

Okay, so you know it’s going to be good when they literally only make acai. Popping up all over the Coast, Oakberry has locations in all your favourite spots, so a bowl is never far away. What do we love most about the Oakberry acai bowl, you ask? No two are the same. It’s a choose-your-own-adventure vibe with bulk flavours, textures and toppings to create your custom flavour. We’re also low-key big fans of the fact that they come in cup-size containers too. No more praying your acai bowl won’t spill in the car on the drive home.
Where: Pretty much everywhere – Surfers Paradise, Burleigh Heads, BSKT at Nobby Beach, Broadbeach, Pacific Fair, Coolangatta, The Pines, Robina and Paradise Point

Nautical Bowls

They’ve served 4,117,946 bowls and counting (literally, you can watch it on their website). So it’s clear, they know how to make a good acai. Their acai bowls feel like a nauti treat, but they’re more like a serving of superfoods, made plant-based, with organic, soy-free and gluten-free ingredients! We recommend the Blue Bay Bowl made with Blue Majik, açaí, coconut, spirulina and chia, and topped with granola, banana, strawberries, and coconut butter crumbles– yummmmmmmm.
