Live at the Drive In makes its debut on the Coast

Live music is back on.

There are many things we have missed a lot in the last little while, and while many of them have or soon will return in some capacity, the one thing we still haven’t had the pleasure of enjoying for far too long is live music. Until now that is Gold Coasters.

Yes it’s true friends, live music is back on albeit a little differently than we might remember it but WHO CARES because we live for it and we’re pretty sure a lot of you do too.

The new 2020 version of live music comes in the form of Live at the Drive In which is a very exciting concept coming to Mudgeeraba Showgrounds on July 4th for your good time-having pleasure.

You know what else is a good time? Tribute bands (because you’ll know all the songs). And you know what you can see at Live at the Drive in? Tribute bands! Double good times.

Some of Australia’s most incredible tribute shows will perform live on stage while you and the crew enjoy an epic, old-fashioned (2019-style) live experience from the comfort of your own car. Maybe take Mum’s 4WD or ute.

Experience a phenomenal line up of acts paying homage to four of the biggest American acts including The Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac and Creedence Clearwater Revival. It’ll be a sing-a-long for the ages.

The team folk at the Wallaby Hotel, along with the Mudgeeraba Showgrounds and Live at the Drive In are putting the show together to help support local musicians, crew, agencies and the community while giving us an unforgettable night of world class live entertainment.

Which is exactly what we all need right now is it not?

There are only 250 spots available and it’s $149.90 per vehicle with a maximum of five passengers in each so get in quick to make sure you don’t miss out.

Gates open at 4.30pm and the last act begins at 8pm. It’s sure to be a night to remember.

Live music is back baby! Grab your tickets here.

Locals love Mudgeeraba, and clearly, we do too. It’s easy to get swept up in the allure of our iconic coastline, but when was the last time you popped into this hinterland haven? It’s a 15 minutes from Burleigh, so you can escape the hustle of the beachside burbs and take our word for it when we say it’s got some of the best eats the Gold Coast has to offer. Big claim, we know, but we stand by it.

We’ve taken the task of finding the best feeds and dos in Mudgeeraba very seriously, so you can just pop in and live like a local for the day. Let’s get into it.

Anekawa Japanese

This has got to be one of the Gold Coast’s best-kept secrets, nestled in the heart of Mudgeeraba’s Village, Anekawa shines a whole new light on traditional Japanese food. Created by chef Koki Anekawa (ex Rick Shores), the menu is a glorious celebration of ethically sourced Australian produce and traditional Japanese fare that we don’t so often see, set to the backdrop of one of the most intimate restaurant spaces we’ve dined in. The menu is ever-changing based on the seasonality of produce and availability of specialty seafood, so you know that what they’re dishing up is fresh AF.

The Wine Barrel

An institution among locals, there’s good reason why The Wine Barrel has stood the test of time, serving up some of the best tapas and wine (obviously) going around. The menu is loaded with an epic variety of food from Asian-inspired dishes to classic tacos. Our must-trys? We can’t go past the pork belly, chilli caramel, coriander and mint to start, followed by the organic black mussels with Napoli, cream and nduja for a serious flavour bomb.

Recently renovated with a refreshed menu to match, the space feels as good as the food tastes. Expect aromatic spices, bold flavours and a lineup of hearty curries and succulent tandoori specialities that keep locals coming back time and time again. Add to that an AGFG 2025 Readers’ Choice Award, and it’s clear why this spots a true local favourite.

Tucked away in the most beautiful old Queenslander, Bon Appetea brings that English whimsy charm to Mudgeeraba – made even better with the beautiful hinterland backdrop. You can pop in for your favourite high tea, whether it’s for breakfast, brunch or lunch, with luxe options too if you’re feeling a little bit fancy. In case you needed more mo-tea-vation to Bon Appetea, their lemon… and chocolate… and cherry crepes are to die for. Heading there in winter? You’ll want to snag a spot fireside while you get cosy, sit and sip on your hot beverage of choice.

Anekawa brings fine Japanese dining to Mudgeeraba

Unique dishes in a stunning little space.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, Japanese dishes are an (absolutely delicious) art form and one that we are happy to indulge in every single day of our lives. Particularly when they are created by someone who has been perfecting said art form for many moons.

Which is exactly what is happening in Mudgeeraba of late due to the opening of Anekawa – an exceptional new Japanese eatery you are going to want to sample at the earliest available opportunity.

It’s an intimate space, perfectly fitted out with light wooden furniture, earthy textures, raw slabs of stone for tabletops and a light sprinkling of draped greenery. You’ll recognise the work of Owen Thompson who has designed and created interiors for the likes of Project Tokyo, Baked at Ancora and Double Barrel Kitchen (to name a few).

The bar is the feature of Anekawa, again made of a huge piece of stone with a few bottles stocked on the wall behind and piles of ceramics perfectly placed to create a cosy, homey vibe that we could absolutely never recreate at home. It’s perfection. As is everything about Anekawa honestly.

Owner and Chef Koki have gone above and beyond to develop a menu that’s quite unlike anything we’ve ever seen with unusual dishes and cooking techniques designed to get you to step outside of your comfort zone.

The focus is on local produce sourced from growers and suppliers with ethical practices and using organic ingredients as much as possible. Koki is very mindful of where everything is grown and how it’s harvested and the high quality produce is the driver behind a menu that changes often, depending on availability.

For example, at the moment there’s a dish involving a Long Spined Sea Urchin because it’s in season and Apellation Oysters are sourced from premium leases in areas where there are native wetlands and are not mass harvested. How good.

One of a couple of the staples on the menu is the Organic Gotofu with sesame soy and cherry granola, which is probably not a dish we’d usually try but was one of the most delicious combinations of flavours we’ve tasted. Absolutely next-level.

Rice Clay Pots are another staple and you can order those in combinations like beef, coddled egg & chives, snow peas & school prawns or sweet corn & butter.

Chargrilled Fish Heads with Umedare and Chives and Pan Fried Petuna Ocean Trout with green pepper kosho and chargrilled capsicum are dishes that are currently on the menu and ones you won’t want to miss out on.

Anekawa (Image: © 2020 Inside Gold Coast)
Anekawa (Image: © 2020 Inside Gold Coast)

Chef Koki uses cooking techniques unique to his birthplace of Saga in Japan and they’re not often used across the rest of the country, let alone here.

There’s also a tightly curated cocktail list and of course, sakes, whiskey’s and beers.

Exceptional, in a word. It’s been a minute since we’ve seen an addition to the Gold Coast dining scene as unique and exciting as Anekawa and we are quite thrilled about it. Go see and sample for yourself.
