Pangaat Indian Restaurant & Bar has just spiced things up.

Curry crushes come and go, but right now the GC is collectively swooning over one spot: Pangaat Indian Restaurant and Bar. Tucked into the leafy charm of Mudgeeraba, this family-run favourite has been building a loyal army of fans since they burst onto the local culinary scene in December 2023. Now, with a fresh renovation, expanded dining space, and an un-biryani-ble menu makeover, Pangaat has entered a new era of dining domination.

Behind the venue are husband-and-wife duo Akash Sarkar (also Head Chef) and Rokeya Rima, who have invested every fibre of their being into creating a place that feels equal parts authentic and inviting. Fast-forward to February 2025, the recent glow-up hits you like a Vindaloo curry; full of flavour, heart, and soul, guaranteed to keep you coming back naan stop.

Rokeya personally oversaw the refreshed interiors, creating a space that feels contemporary yet cosy. Think soft ivory walls, timber flooring and sculptural handwoven rattan pendant lights that bloom overhead like floral chandeliers. The expanded dining area offers extra space to spread out and savour every bite, while the revamped bar – complete with oak shelving and tasteful dusty pink star-motif tiles – adds a subtle touch of sophistication without losing the warm neighbourhood feel. Indoor and outdoor dining options mean there’s a perfect perch whether date night is on the cards or more of a casual curry catch-up.

Of course, the real star of the show is what’s coming out of the kitchen. Chef Akash’s menu leans proudly into legit Indian flavours, built on traditional spice blends and slow-cooked techniques that honour the classics while giving them a fresh Pangaat twist.  Each dish carries the kind of depth that only comes from years of experience, and recipes crafted from a true custodian of Indian cuisine like Akash. The offering continues to evolve too, with new additions keeping regulars on their toes while staying true to the restaurant’s roots.

To give you a glimpse into the new menu, why not start with Saffron Lamb Chops or a Cheesy Chicken Tikka. Then, for the main event, we highly recommend you try the Kosha Mangsho, Bhuna Goat curry or the 6 hours Slow-cooked Lamb Shank. Or, if seafood is more your love language, you can’t go past Meen Moilee, a Kerala-style fish stew. Pair it with a Hyderabadi-inspired Nawabi Pulao and the irresistible Peshwari Naan. And to complete the experience, indulge in the Shahi Honey Baked Peach.

Vegetarians, you’ll certainly feel the love here with meat-free options up the wazoo, like an entrée of Aloo Tikki Chaat. Back it up with an Aloo Gobi.

Dinner without drinks is like curry without rice and we can confirm that the drinks menu here is as delicious as it is extensive. Why not try the Sharab-e-Gulab, or the Coconut Chilli Margarita. For those who aren’t in the mood for a cocktail, there are a wide range of beers, including the Indian made Kingfisher Draught Beer, ciders, wines, spirits, mocktails and other non-alcoholic beverages like the house-made Indian, Kaffir lime Nimbu Soda on offer.

And just when you thought dinner was doing all the heavy lifting, lunch at Pangaat swoops in like the mid-day hero we didn’t know we needed. Running Friday to Sunday, the lunch lineup is a vibrant, flavour-packed tour of India, starring their fan-fave Grand Thali – a glorious, all-in-one platter that’s basically a choose-your-own-adventure for your tastebuds. It’s generous, it’s gorgeous, and it’s giving main character energy.

They’ve also rolled out South Indian dosas (plain or masala), served the traditional way with coconut chutney and sambar, because nothing says “long lunch” quite like crispy, golden dosa dipped, dunked and devoured.

What sets Pangaat apart isn’t just the food, it’s the consistency, the attention to detail, and the genuine warmth that greets guests from the moment they walk in. The service can only be compared to a big warm hug, and we’re certainly not the only ones who’ve noticed. Pangaat scored a nod in last year’s AGFG Readers’ Choice Award for best Indian restaurant on the Gold Coast (metro) which is no small potatoes… or should we say, no small samosas.

As Pangaat settles into its bigger, brighter chapter, one thing is clear – this is a passion project simmering on all the right burners. Consider this the official notice to curry up and pay them a visit.

You’re the naan that I want

Pangaat Indian Restaurant & Bar tikka’s all the boxes.

If you also subscribe to the ethos that few problems can’t be solved with a comforting curry (and, obligatory buttery cloud of naan bread) you’ll be on cloud ‘naan’ to hear about the new spice-slinging dahl-ing shaking things up on Mudgeeraba’s eats scene. Taking on the tongue-tingling flavours of India with a modern twist, Pangaat Indian Restaurant & Bar is absolutely worth ‘currying’ on about.

Pangaat Indian Restaurant & Bar, Mudgeeraba (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)
Pangaat Indian Restaurant & Bar, Mudgeeraba (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

Not your average neighbourhood Indian nosher, Pangaat is coming in like a good Vindaloo – hot – with a mouth-watering selection of crafted cocktails such as the signature Bombay Blossom, and contemporary flavours to complement the requisite collection of spectacular and soul-hugging curry dishes.

On the menu, familiar faves like Curry Puffs and Mango Chicken mingle with tantalising combos like Pangaat Fried Chicken with Tamarind-infused Aioli, Crispy Stuffed Mushrooms and charred Saffron Lamb Cutlets.

Inspired by the Sanskrit word ‘Pankti’ – which represents the ritual of converging over food, irrespective of caste or creed, Pangaat has taken up residence in Mudgeeraba’s historical Railway Street strip. A joint venture by owners Rokeya Rima and Akash Sarkar, the duo selected the township for its tight-knit community feel, whilst maintaining a close enough proximity to handle the hankerings of the city’s heaving central suburbs.

Now sharing a ‘hood with the likes of Anekawa, Lenny Pizzeria and Junior’s Deli – Mudgeeraba’s latest flavour purveyor sure is in some excellent company.

Pangaat Indian Restaurant & Bar, Mudgeeraba (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)
Chef Akash Sarkar making naan at Pangaat Indian Restaurant & Bar, Mudgeeraba (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

Something that, we can only surmise is no accident, since Akash brings some hefty culinary chops to the role of Head Chef – racking up some ten years in high-end restaurant across the globe before deciding to pour all that expertise into Pangaat. For his first solo venture, Chef Akash’s vision was to create a venue that ‘encompassed the essence of India by combining tradition with contemporary touches’.

Pangaat Indian Restaurant & Bar, Mudgeeraba (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)
Pangaat Indian Restaurant & Bar, Mudgeeraba (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

This ethos is also evident in the space, with the pair opting for a pared back, light and cosy fit out that still embraces all the welcoming village-vibes of its locale. The menu, meanwhile, tikka’s all the boxes – with a showcase of Akash’s ‘sophisticated cooking with the simplicity of style’, that offers an extensive and tantalising mix of Indian dishes to pick between.

Pangaat Indian Restaurant & Bar, Mudgeeraba (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

The specialties here are plentiful, so we’d suggest gathering your crew for a good, ‘ole fashioned share-style feast. And if this sounds like your jam, or chutney, rather – the Chef’s Special Banquet Menu is where it’s at, where you can tuck in to a curation of mouth-watering classics such as Onion Bhaji and Tandoori Chicken Tikka sans pre-dinner mental gymnastics.

Or perhaps you and your crew prefer to go rogue with the classic, choose-your-own-adventure style feast, piling the table with a haphazard mix of fragrant, communal plates like Malai Kofta and Cauliflower brazule alongside staples like Butter chicken and Vindaloo lamb. Mmmm, our tastebuds are already tingling at the thought… (better grab some Raita, just in case).

The artfully crafted cocktails also offer plenty of choice, though if we absolutely must pick one, the Ink gin & lavender syrup-based Velvet Sour is as pretty as they come… and keep them coming, please and thank you.

Or maybe we’ll throw in a mango-infused Mumbai Margarita finished with chilli-salt rim, for good measure… they say variety is the spice of life, after all.

25 hatted Gold Coast restaurants in 2026

Top honours for your faves.

Palette, HOTA (image supplied)
Palette, HOTA (image supplied)

Look we’re all partial to a good hat but if you’re a chef, a hat is all that and a bag of chips. Each year, the Australian Good Food Guide awards hats to the crème de la crème in the restaurant world. And while some of our neighbouring cities may have once side‑eyed the Gold Coast’s dining scene, it’s official: the tables have turned, and the GC is strutting its stuff.

This year, a whopping 25 of our favourite local eateries snagged at least one hat, and we’re practically bursting with pride! The AGFG rates each restaurant out of 20, and although nobody’s hit that elusive perfect score just yet, there’s plenty of brilliance on display.

Mamasan, Broadbeach (image supplied)
Mamasan, Broadbeach (image supplied)

In a twist everyone saw coming, Broadbeach cleaned up with seven venues receiving hats. The newly revamped Mamasan charmed its way to a score of 13, while Social Eating House and Bar (13) matched it with its masterful blend of modern Australian favourites.

The Oracle Boulevard scene was further flaunted by BLOWFISH Ocean Grill + Bar (12) and kōst (13), each offering their own distinct flavour explosions for diners.

Of course, several of The Star Gold Coast’s restaurants collected gongs. Japanese sensation Kiyomi scored a sophisticated 14, while the sleek Modern Australian fine‑dining gem Nineteen at the Star earned 13.

Rounding out Broady’s winners, long‑standing steak haven Moo Moo The Wine Bar and Grill received a solid 13, keeping carnivores grinning from ear to ear.

Travel south to Mermaid Beach and you’ll find boutique dining superstar The North Room boasting an impressive 15, a testament to its thoughtful, modern dishes executed with technical precision. Beloved Little Truffle Dining Room & Bar earned 14, and esteemed Japanese haunt Etsu Izakaya scored 13, continuing its legacy of refined flavours.

Slick Latin American newcomer Norté, with its vibrant, fiesta‑inspired energy and bold Mexican flavours, made its debut with a 12. Euro-inspired Juju (13) and The Oxley’s stalwart fave Lars(12), rounded out Nobby’s award recipients.

Robina’s Eddy + Wolff represented with a well-earned 12. It just goes to show that the ‘burbs can cook up a winner too, not just the Insta-set-favoured pockets.

Speaking of, Mudgeeraba’s intimate Japanese (and under-the-radar superstar) Anekawa, earned itself a 13, while Bundall’s Mediterranean‑meets‑local gem Bar Leo Food & Wine debuted with a solid 12.

Rick Shores, Burleigh (image by Mathilde Bouby)

Burleigh wasn’t left behind either. Rick Shores scored 13 for its delectable contemporary pan-Asian offerings. The Gold Coast highway strip represented with Vietnamese pin-up boy Jimmy Wah’s(13).

Daniel Ridgeway’s Palm Beach offering Madame V was shown some love with 13, while Kirra’s beachfront Billy Chow (12) made its debut, earning recognition for its playful pan‑Asian menu.

Let’s journey back to the central neck of the woods, starting with Surfers Paradise’s Modern Australian superstar Palette located at HOTA, Home of the Arts, topping the list with a stellar 16. This Modern Australian standout blends bold flavours with innovative techniques, earning its spot among Queensland’s finest.

The JW Marriott Gold Coast’s seafood superstar Citrique earned a 14, while the QT’s Japanese phenomenon Yamagen scored 13 and The Langham’s Cantonese gem T’ang Court scored 12.

Over in Main Beach, La Luna Dining scored 12 with its modern Australian waterfront charm.

Anyone who still says we’re lacking in the quality eats department here on the Goldie, now is the time to concede defeat because this list of local victories confirms what we already knew – our foodie scene has officially become a force to be reckoned with and there’s plenty more to come…
