If buttery pastries and cute brekkie dates surrounded by fresh posies is your idea of bliss, get ready for the brand new triple-threat cafe in town to feel like paradise found. How do you bloom, J’s Brunchette – the pleasure is allll ours!

Patisserie, brunch haunt and florist all rolled into one, J’s Brunchette brings together some of the very best things in life under one bountiful roof (did we mention it’s dog friendly?!). Bolstering morning coffee runs with flaky, baked-daily croissants and colourful bouquets; Mermaid’s most ravenous can now get amongst golden halloumi and hash filled brekkie feasts and lunch bites like Tiger Prawn and squid ink pasta. We’re really dating ourselves here, but to quote the 00’s club circuit banger – #I’mInHeaven.

Located a stone’s throw from the iconic Hedges beachfront, you can find Mermaid’s latest lurking on the corner of Seabeach Ave and the Gold Coast Highway. The culmination of several months of reno’s, the newly-polished, Parisian-inspired addition has delivered a crisp white facade, pops of pink, and French bistro seating all tucked under a sunny, all-weather terrace. Exactly the kind of aesthetic that twists our arm into falling inside for a little treaty-treat, no?

A spot as cute as a boutonniere right down to the name – Brunchette, the French word for brunch, will forevermore be our favourite way of referring to the best meal of the day; while the J is a nod to owner, Jasmine Chen. Implicitly aware that pastries taste better by the sea, it comes as no surprise that Jasmine chose this site for its breezy, beachy proximity.

Joined by a pastry chef with more than 20 years of experience; Chef Ming is the veritable choux master charged with whipping up flaky goodies like glossy Strawberry Tarts and Vanilla Crème Croissants on the daily (six days a week, if we’re getting technical – yet another reason Monday should get in the bin already #boo).

Along with the seductive selection of house-made patisserie, J’s Brunchette is pumping out cafe-style breakfast and lunch classics, with a stacked menu of specialty beverages to shake up your usual Long Black or Latte. Like the summery Strawberry Jasmine Tea, and the velvety espresso and mascarpone-topped Tiramisu Latte, which are truly treats in their own right!

If it’s brekkie you’re in the market for, J’s has got you covered – Scramble, Smashed Avo Sourdough and Shakshuka served with chorizo – the gang’s all here.

Continuing the savoury smash hits well into lunch, bun-based fare, the Buttermilk fried chicken or Beef burgers, served with beer battered fries are both worthy contenders for refuelling post beach. Or if you’re feeling something fresh and zesty, the Salmon yuzu soba noodle, made with slaw, edamame avo and heirloom tomato, has gotchu.

But whatever you do, just don’t leave without a Waterfall Tiramisu For Two (serving suggestions never have been our forte… #ServingSizeSchmervingSchmize).

Heck, while you’re treating yourself, why not brighten your whole damn week and pick up some fresh blooms while you’re at it!

Scroll-y moly!

Burnt Croissants is our favourite roadside pastry phenomenon.

Custard Danish with seasonal fruit, Burnt Croissants (image supplied)
Custard Danish with seasonal fruit, Burnt Croissants (image supplied)

What a treat it is when you come across a roadside stand loaded with home-grown goodies. If you’re always down for a pit-stop to stock up on all the juiciest and plumpest farm gate provisions, we’re going to blow your mind with a red-hot roadside viennoiserie venture known as Burnt Croissants. Did somebody say drive-by danish? Yes, yes we did… scroll-y moly, you guys!

Burnt Croissants roadside stall (image supplied)
Burnt Croissants roadside stall (image supplied)

The brainchild of local baking fanatic, Lucy Davis, Burnt Croissants is something of a paddock-to-plate situation where punters can swing by and pick up painstakingly hand-crafted Croissants, Pain Au Chocolat and just-baked Cinnamon Scrolls fresh from the gate and directly into their face-holes.

Burnt Croissants (image supplied)
Burnt Croissants roadside stall (image supplied)

Based a 20 minute drive inland from Burleigh in Austinville, this little pastry venture is certainly taking the road less travelled. Undoubtedly the most delectable (and downright genius) roadside operation in all of 4213. Every Sunday, Lucy sets up shop to hawk her hand-crafted wares direct from the front gate of her childhood abode… and locals are eating. it. up.

From 8am on any given Sunday, you can find Lucy’s wholesome, market-vibing pop up, fronting the back streets of the picturesque Numinbah Valley. Camped out beneath the trademark red marquee and trestle tables, savvy locals can secure their pre-orders via DM or text. Or, try their luck at nabbing the likes of fresh-baked Custard Danishes and Almond Croissants, from the rotation of signature extra-golden goodies available on the day. Complete with op shop bunting and hand-painted signage hung on the fence… it’s all very #cottagecore and we love it.

Burnt Croissants (image supplied)

Like all the best pie-in-the-sky ideas, it was a reel (and a sprinkling of scroll-induced serendipity) that initially led Lucy to set her sights on this butter-based project.… cheers #foodstagram, we owe ya one! The nominated family ‘birthday cake maker’, Lucy says she has been baking at home ever since she can remember. Self-taught pastry sensation Lucy credits her talent to many an hour spent poring over ‘countless cookbooks and Pinterest recipes’.

Burnt Croissants (image supplied)
Pastries by Burnt Croissants (image supplied)

Setting aside an entire weekend to conquer the perfect croissant, Lucy quickly discovered her deep love for the challenging craft of viennoiserie. From there Lucy launched straight into her first event at the community Spring Fair. Selling out within one hour, her stall was a smash hit – and, the ‘rest’, as they say, is history!

Croissants by Burnt Croissants (image supplied)
Croissants by Burnt Croissants (image supplied)

Lucy’s extra-caramelized creations quickly became somewhat of a signature. And thus, Burnt Croissants was soon born, and not unlike the making of a good croissant, the story of the name comes with quite the twist. A customer slid into Lucy’s DM’s after one of her first stalls to request that the treats be made less toasty as “these border on being burnt”. The message inspired Lucy to lean into her delectably cronchy point-of-difference.

We love a good success story – especially one that looks, smells and tastes this good? Now if you’ll excuse us, we’ve got to get in our preorders for next weekend.

The Tropic, Burleigh Heads (image supplied)

Ahh, the blessed ritual of brunch. Leisurely feasts of eggs every which way you can imagine, sticky, syrup-drenched French toast stacks, and smoked salmon for days – what’s not to love? Plus, it gives us the excuse to sleep in, and our taste buds are rewarded pretty handsomely for the trouble.

Couple it with a little concept known as bottomless cocktails, and life doesn’t get much better. So universally beloved is the sip-happy cousin of this mid-morning rendezvous, we’ve rustled up an entire list of the best places on the GC to get your boozy brunch-fest fix (say that five times fast after two hours of free-flowing mimosas).

From north to south, gather your mates, don your stretchy pants and jump on the brunch bandwagon!

And when you’ve got these spots right on your doorstep, we can kind of understand why. So come with us and explore what locals love so much about our beachside beauty, Mermaid Beach.
