Tis the sea-son for oceanside Italian eats!

You’re ‘shore’ to fall in love with Surfers Paradise’s La Calabrese at Ocean

Ocean gazing whilst eating your body weight in delicious Italian fare – that’s the dream. Unless you’re in togs with that annoying friend who documents everything on her grid, but there are apps for that so yeah, still the dream #filtersonfilters. Well, this is precisely what Surfers Paradise’s La Calabrese at Ocean is proposing and WE.DO! To place us in even higher ‘spirits’ just add a refreshing cocktail and forgive us, but sun’s out pun’s out we say.

Situated right next to the pristine beach, La Calabrese at Ocean is all about traditional Italian ingredients with a modern twist. Keen foodies and/or folk who frequent Melbourne will recognise the name (sans the ocean part) and we’re pleased to confirm that the cuisine is equally on point. After two years of success – pandemic and all – a sea-change expansion was planned and boom, we’re blessed with our very own authentic yet contemporary Italian slinging La Calabrese…with ocean views to boot #CopThatMelbourne!

Owner Ruixin Wang (Rae) worked with Savitri Gandakusumah from Dreampods Group to bring the restaurant’s aesthetic to life, offering both indoor and outdoor dining and a swoon-worthy 90 square metre ocean-view terrace. With capacity for 200 guests, can someone we know pls book a huge ‘shell-abration’ and invite us already?! There are also special VIP seatings for a more exclusive experience and this has us written all over it.

Boasting a blend of the ‘old’ and ‘new’ generations of Italian professionals, the entire kitchen and floor team hail from Calabria, Tuscany, Sicily, Milan and Brescia. Their passion for cooking and food is infectious and they’re Italians right, so #obvs. They love nothing more than talking about food culture and food education, which is fine by us coz we love nothing more than listening!

Speaking of food, Head Chef Rocco Premoli can do no wrong in our eyes, rolling out a menu brimming with ‘things that make you hmm mmm’. For antipasti, you can’t go past the Crudo Di Pesce, with marinated kingfish, citrus dressing, watermelon, chives and green oil. The pizzas in particular are food-gasmic, and if you don’t concur then soz but #weir-dough. Anything but your average pizza, a process called ‘biga’ is used to make the dough and honestly, the ‘yeast’ we can do is divulge why this technique is so special. Combining the sugar of the Italian flour with yeast to go through a pre-fermentation process, this is just the first step of dough-making and srsly, #skillz.

How about a Mortadella with fiordilatte, mortadella, Stracciatella cheese, fried squid and pistachio and if you’ve never tried pistachio on a pizza, you’re welcome. Or if you’re channelling a pasta (ALWAYS), you can’t go past the Agnolotti with homemade ravioli, beef cheek, sage butter, and parmesan fondue. Make sure you pair it with the signature Focaccia Black Garlic, a wood-fired focaccia house made black garlic butter because carbs on carbs is life.

It’s dessert o-clock and besides being one of our favourite times (besides cocktail o-clock…which is 24/7), we suggest a Panna Cotta with lavender, honey, chocolate crumble and beetroot gel. Now we’re thinking about cocktails coz we’re us, and the Tipsy Illy with Disaronoo, illy cream and fresh strawberries totally caught out eye. As did the Paradise Margarita with cazadores tequila, Chambord, blackberries, jalapeno and lime juice coz this combo srsly floats our yacht.

19 epic Gold Coast pizza places

They’ve stolen a pizza our hearts!

A food that needs zero introduction – pizza is Italy’s gift to the world that just keeps on giving (to our happiness levels and waistlines, mainly). From office parties to cozy date nights, this god-tier culinary creation is the celebratory cornerstone of gatherings everywhere. We can think of no occasion that isn’t improved by the addition of this beloved Italian staple…. and if there is, we don’t wanna know about it.

A dish steeped in tradition; pizza is divisive as it is delicious. Team crispy, or team chewy and chonky, deep dish style?  Then there’s the question of the toppings – to olive, or not to olive? – and don’t even get us started on pineapple!

Here are 19 of the best, from north to south, so you can dig in without delay (okay maybe just a little delay, molten hot cheese is no joking matter).

Crispy Italian Bar

Here’s a factoid for you – in Italy, the term “bar” stands for more of a watering-hole-meets-cafe hybrid; combining coffee, cocktails, sweet snacks like pastries and quintessential savoury Italian fare… so basically, all the best things. Unintentional micro geography lesson aside, this concept is exactly what owner Riccardo ‘Ricky’ Proserpio set about recreating at Crispy – and now you know this place is fantastic for several reasons, including a top-tier traditional pizza selection. To name just one, the long-standing fave, Margherita, which also comes in a 1/2 metre in size. You won’t be disappointed.
Our pick: Diavola Pizza
Where: 4/1840 Gold Coast Highway, Burleigh Heads

Justin Lane

Tommy’s Italian

One minute, we’re passing through Currumbin minding our own business, and the next, our mouths immediately commence watering at the mere sight of Tommy’s telltale red and white umbrellas adorning the promenade. And that’s before we’ve even caught wind of the freshly-flamed bites bubbling away within! In only a few short years, this two-storey cutie has become a fixture along the suburb’s seaside strip; serving up multi-million dollar ocean views and mighty fine pizzas to match (and cocktails… because nothing says happiness like a slice of Italy in one hand and a margi in the other). Who can resist? Certainly not us.

7 reasons locals love Surfers Paradise

The original icon of the Gold Coast.

Once upon a time we left holidaymakers to their own devices in arguably the GC’s most famous beachside suburb, but off the beaten path – well to be fair, some are still very much on it – locals have been keeping these gems all to themselves for a little too long if you ask us. That’s right, Surfers Paradise is more than a postcard-perfect destination, it’s a lifestyle locals love to embrace, because why should we leave all the fun to the tourists! So now we’re here to spill the beans on all the reasons locals can’t get enough of Surfers Paradise.

Outdoor Dining at Paradise Centre, Surfers Paradise (image supplied)

For all-in-one spots
Surfers Paradise does convenience like a pro with destinations where you can shop, eat, and play all in one spot. Paradise Centre is a beachside fave with a mix of fashion, food, and fun, right at your fingertips in the heart of Cavill Mall. Just a short stroll away you’ll find Soul Boardwalk where laidback vibes met beachside dining and retail therapy aplenty – because what better way to get the food digesting than with a shopping moment.

If an urban escape is more up your alley then pop on over to Chevron Renaissance for all your boutique shopping needs, whether it’s a bite to eat, to grab groceries for the week, a new fit for that special event or a pedicure pamper moment your wish is their command. The two hour free parking is also a big drawcard!

All-you-can eats
If you’re in the market for a buffet that’ll bowl you over then you’ve come to the right place because at this point buffet should be Surfers Paradise’s middle name.

Locals know that they’ve got the buffet game locked down so if you’re up for eating so much seafood you’ll need to unbutton your pants to fit in another plate then Citrique at the JW Marriott has your name all over it.

Just down the highway you’ll find a bustling international market that dreams (and hungry bellies) are made of with QT Gold Coast’s iconic Bazaar Marketplace experience.

Edging on the cusp of neighbouring Broady, Horizon Sky Dining might have pretty much everything on the menu but what about revolving panoramic views of the Gold Coast? They’ve got those two and we’ll take a plate of both thank you very much.

Little Tommy’s is one hot pizza ass!

The newest Tommy is open!

Little Tommy's, Currumbin (image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)
Little Tommy's, Currumbin (image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

Proving that good genes run in the family, Tommy’s Italian has a little sister and we’re calling it now – it’ll reach Carb-dashian status. Set to secure a sizeable slice of the Currumbin Italian food scene when it opens this Friday 21st October, Little Tommy’s is a real pizza work. Just 500m down the road from its super popular sibling, it’s the more approachable, relaxed and uncomplicated one, kinda like Khloe K and why do we feel like we’re going down a slippery slope here…

Little Tommy's, Currumbin (image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)
Little Tommy's, Currumbin (image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

Owners Tom Torchut and Ronnie Tarabay have done it again, this time in the form of a takeaway geared Italian pizzeria, with the option to sit in and enjoy an obligatory beachside bev. Nestled on the corner of Duringan Street and Thrower Drive, it will deliver the ultimate casual pizza experience and we can never have too many of these. No need to make a booking, just roll on in and yep, you’ll most likely roll on out too #FoodComaIncoming. We’re talking handpicked favourites from Tommy’s Italian, plus epic new bites designed especially for the nook to make us chant “carbs are friend not foe”.

Little Tommy's, Currumbin (image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)
Little Tommy's, Currumbin (image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

Featuring indoor bar seating and outdoor seating, there’s space for 40 people to kick back and savour the flavours. Sink a drink from the carefully selected wines and lovingly created cocktails which bonus, boast minimal intervention. But more on those later because we need to talk about the fit out which was masterfully executed by Arch Interiors and Element Shopfitting. Adopting a colour scheme in sync with Tommy’s Italian, think deck chairs, red and white gingham style (not to be confused with Gangnam style coz, just, no) checked table clothes, and an eye-catching red tiled façade.

Little Tommy's, Currumbin (image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)
Little Tommy's, Currumbin (image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

The menu has us swooning and we’re down for the Fried Smoked Mozzarella to start because fried cheese is our utopia. For mains, it’s gotta be a pizza, seeing as we haven’t had a slice since last Thursday and seven days without makes one weak. Let’s go with the Margarita and stop press, for once we’re not talking about the drinkable variety. When done Tommy-style, the simplistic goodness of the fior di latte, San Marzano and basil is impossible to beat. If we’re feeling pasta inclined (we are) we think the Pappardelle will do nicely, with lamb ragu, pappardelle, red wine, parsley and pecorino. We know we probs shouldn’t but bugger it, let’s finish with Tommy’s Original Tiramisu because there’s nothing wrong with eating your body weight, right?!? (there is).

Little Tommy's, Currumbin (image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

Moving on to the refreshments, there’s lo-fi wines, local craft beers, and our forever friend, premium cocktails made from locally sourced hand pressed fruit juices. In particular, have a go of the signature cocktail offering, Little Red. Imagine lamington vodka (It’s.A.Thing), raspberry prosecco syrup and a squeeze of lime juice, garnished with a chocolate raspberry powder so it’s matchy matchy with the décor. Spesh.

So regardless of how you slice it, Little Tommy’s is destined to please many-a-palette and fill the big shoes of big bro up the street. Crust us.

Where: 140 Duringan Street, Currumbin
