Sogno Italiano’s empire expands to Broadbeach with Oro.
Sogno Italiano’s empire expands to Broadbeach with Oro.

They say good things come in threes, and this gleaming new venue in the Sogno Italiano story confirms it.
Owned by cousins Sushil and Prajwol Maharjan, Oro by Sogno Italiano is the result of a 14-year culinary courtship with Italian cuisine. The duo, originally from Nepal, cut their teeth in kitchens around the world, managing restaurants, running services and quietly perfecting their craft. They opened their first Sogno Italiano in Mermaid Waters in 2021, followed by Burleigh Waters in 2023. And now Oro? Oro is their golden child.

Sitting pretty on Surf Parade in Broadbeach, Oro by Sogno is light and bright inside and out, with lush greenery all around and timber accents on the floors and ceiling. There’s also a moody private room for 24 to 45 guests, designed for long lunches that may accidentally turn into all-nighters.

The Oro menu has been leveled up from the homely dishes offered in Mermaid and Burleigh, with Italian classics given a contemporary twist thanks to the exciting young talent in the kitchen. On one side is Federica Savinelli, a chef from Italy with pasta in her blood. She hand-makes pasta daily, rolling tradition with a modern spin. On the other side is Ranjan Bohara, a Gold Coast local industry gun with nine years of experience and an impressive resume that includes Glass Dining & Lounge Bar at Marina Mirage. He commands the grill, turning hand-picked steaks and seafood into flame-kissed feasts.

Start with antipasto dishes like a local Byron Bay Burrata, served with heirloom tomatoes, basil, toasted pistachio, olive oil and balsamic. It’s simple, elegant and dressed to impress.
Pair that with Affettati Misti of 24 months parma prosciutto, mortadella and wagyu bresola served with homemade fresh bread, grilled zucchini, Cornichons and capsicum.

Seafood lovers, take a deep breath. The Seafood Platter arrives stacked with oysters, king prawns, bugs, scallops, lobster, barramundi and octopus, served with chips, lemon and salmoriglio sauce. It’s a nod to both Italian long lunches and the Broadbeach setting.
When it comes to mains, a standout dish Sogno fans can’t get enough of is the Spaghetti with Moreton Bay Bugs. Pasta is lovingly coated in cherry tomatoes, white wine, chilli and lush lobster bisque, all served in a bug shell.

For something heartier, the Mafaldine Ragu alla Genovese, features oxtail and beef ribs slow-cooked for 12 hours until they surrender completely. It’s comfort food you’ve been craving.
Make sure you leave room for Tiramisu, or if you like dessert in liquid form, the Watermelon Smash or Oro Espresso Martini will go down a treat.
There’s also a large wine selection and Sogno have even created their own beer for their new venue – the Oro Lager.

For Sushil and Prajwol, Oro is their heartfelt thank you to “the Italian chefs who guided us, to the culture that embraced us and to every guest who chooses to dine with us.”
