It’s time for a Festive Fiesta at Cabana Bar & Lounge

Taste their new menu while you’re at it.

We love the festive season, all of the eating and drinking with zero guilt, time spent with your favourite folks, sunshiny days on the beach, all of the very best things.

If you haven’t already, it’s high time you booked in a few soirees with all those groups of friends we know you have, not to mention colleagues and people you only speak to once a year but any excuse for a session hey?

And guess what, we’ve found the perfect spot to indulge in as much eating and drinking as you please with an array of tasty goodies and all in a fun, semi-outdoor space up north at Southport Sharks.

It’s Cabana Bar & Lounge and yes, there are cabanas aplenty for your partying pleasure – they’re really quite festive in themselves aren’t they – and they are ripe for the Christmas party picking.

Choose from two packages; the first is $35 per person and includes a selection of tapas plates, Christmas bon bons, hats and decorations and the second is $45 per person and comes with all of the above plus a champagne cocktail on arrival.

You’ll have a private cabana and you may also hire the entire space including the bar if you wish. This years’ Christmas cocktail is the Jack Frost and that sounds delightful if you ask us.

So what’s to eat?

Cabana Bar & Lounge launched a new menu not too long ago and it includes many a tasty treat.

We love everything on it to be honest but in particular the Tandoori Spice Cauliflower Wings, Karaage Chicken Poppers, Portuguese Crispy Squid and Coconut and Lemon Myrtle Prawns are real winners.

There are also sliders of the Honey Dipped BBQ Pulled Pork and Signature Beef and American Cheese varieties and flatbread pizzas in flavours like Pork & Bourbon Bacon and Fig and Goat’s Cheese.

YES PLEASE.

You can get loaded platters too including mixes of the entire tapas menu and that’s probably the go if you enjoy eating as much as we do.

Drinks-wise you may indulge in all your favourite cocktails but the jugs are the real MVPs.

The Cucumber and Apple Gintail is our favourite with Ink Gin, apple schnapps, cucumber, mint, apple juice, simple syrup, cranberry juice and soda and it’s the perfect sweet, refreshing summer sip.

There are also a few signature cocktails you’ll want to sample. We love the Sweet-toothed Old Fashioned with Wild Turkey American Honey Bourbon, Courvoisier Cognac, simple syrup and bitters.

So you see, all the best things are on offer at Cabana Bar & Lounge this festive season (and always). Book yourself a good time now.

It’s Wellness Month at Southport Sharks Health + Fitness.

We’re just a wee three seconds away from 2020, or so it seems with the rapid rate the year has progressed of late. The next couple of months will no doubt pass in a whirlwind of balmy beach days, bikinis and BBQs on the beach in bikinis.

Which is why November is the perfect time to get ourselves prepped and ready for the New Year, new us scenario we’re about to encounter.

Enter Southport Sharks Health + Fitness who have very kindly dubbed November Wellness Month and created some super exciting events for us all to get started on said prepping.

There’ll be workshops, classes and tasting sessions dedicated to yoga, Pilates, mindfulness, meditation and nutrition.

Here’s a few favourites we think you should absolutely sign up for

The Nourish Workshop
Friday 8th November from 6.45pm (1.5 hours)
How can we nourish ourselves? In this workshop, you’ll discuss areas of life that are important to nourish, so you can be the best version of yourself. Keeping the approach simple, find out how you can improve your energy, sleep, digestion and vitality. It’s free for members and $20 for non-members.

Bush Flower Circle Workshop
Thursday 21st November from 5.45pm (2 hours)
Bush flowers are powerful remedies that have been used across our beautiful land for centuries. They work on an energetic and vibrational level to support the underlying emotional causes of disease and illness, thus providing a subtle transformation from the inside out. Whether you need support for repeated patterns in your life, with recent or upcoming changes, Australian Bush Flowers are for everyone. Join the circle and create a personalised remedy to take home. It’s $35 for members and $45 for non-members.

Yoga Retreat
Saturday 16th November from 8.30am (3 hours)
A whole morning of yoga is very good for the soul; movement, breathing, stillness, all of the nourishing things. The day will begin with yang and hatha yoga at 8.30am blending the benefits of passively holding yoga poses with more dynamic sequences and standing postures. That’s followed by a 30 minute massage tutorial including styles of massages, self-massage trigger points, basic stretching and foam roller techniques. Then it’s time for yin yoga and meditation; a meditative practice with deep and long held postures that will revitalise your entire body and balance your meridian system. 12 bueno Gold Coast Mexican spots

On your marg, get set, GO!

Costa Taco, Broadbeach (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)
Costa Taco, Broadbeach (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

It’s one of life’s greatest pleasures; eating Mexican and drinking margis – sounds a bit corny but we stand by it. So it’s pretty darn lucky the Gold Coast is spoilt for choice when it comes to Mexican meals, mmm there’s a little Mariachi band playing in our head just thinking about it.

And if you don’t like Mexican then this is guac-ward, because we’ve done the heavy lifting – aka eating – so you can pick your taco joint of choice and put your taco where your mouth is. Come on, don’t be salty – unless you’re a margarita of course.

So here’s our round up of the Coast’s best spots to get your Mexican fix, but before you go don’t forget the rules – first we fiesta, then we siesta. We’ll be there faster than you can say “extra guac, please”.

Street Taco Bar & Taqueria

Street Taco Bar & Taqueria brings bold, flavour-packed Mexican eats to Paradise Point, and locals are absolutely here for it. Blending authentic flavours with a laidback coastal vibe, this colourful spot serves up all the classics with serious heart. On the menu, think punchy tacos, loaded nachos, slow-cooked meats and churros worth saving room for, all made fresh and gluten-free without missing a beat. The margaritas are flowing, the energy is warm and welcoming, and it’s the kind of place you’ll find yourself coming back to on repeat.
Where: Shop 5, 46 The Esplanade, Paradise Point

El Camino Cantina

With shops across the country, we’re lucky to have ourselves one of these spicy little dens of Mexican magic here on the Goldy. Slip in and slip on a sombrero and let the endless fantastic food and de-lish cocktails flow. Overlooking one of the Gold Coast’s best known beaches – Surfers Paradise – it’s big on size, vibes and margs… No really, the margs are giant and nothing gets us going like a cocktail as big as our sombrero.

The Aztec

Kicking around since 1995, The Aztec Broadbeach…along with The Aztec Coolangatta…is a hit with the whole fam, boasting a fun-loving mixture of cosy booths, ultra-modern furnishings, neon lights and an epic fluoro bar. A colourful and upbeat venue, you’re spoilt for choice with all the Mexican goodies you’d hope to find and half price lunches Friday through Sunday in case you needed any more convincing.
Where: The Aria Building, Shop 11/17 Albert Avenue, Broadbeach & 152 Griffith Street (Twin Towns end), Coolangatta

Costa Taco

We briefly considered gatekeeping Costa Taco to keep those highly coveted tables to ourselves, but a list of epic Mexican eats without it just wouldn’t sit right. Especially now they’ve expanded with a Broadbeach outpost and their biggest venue yet in Burleigh. Serving up seriously authentic Mexican fare, the menu is short, sharp and all about doing a few things exceptionally well, with a focus on local, seasonal ingredients. Now, stop reading and order the fish tacos.

Nude Amigos

Grab your (fully clothed) amigos and head on down to Cancun – okay fine, Broadbeach – because Nude Amigos might be cheeky in name, but its flavours are seriously bold. The space is light, breezy and effortlessly chic, basically calling your name for a long, leisurely sip of one of the exotic (read: very fancy) tequilas lining the bar.

And the good times don’t stop there – Nude Amigos has spread the fiesta across three locations, with venues in Broadbeach, Coolangatta and Kingscliff, so you’re never too far from a margarita moment.
Where: Lot 1, 70 Surf Parade, Broadbeach, The Strand Shopping Centre, Coolangatta and 60 Marine Parade, Kingscliff

Bonita Bonita

Eats institution Bonita Bonita, along with little sister Bon Bon (pouring mezcals and tequilas for your pre or post-dinner festivities), is a long-standing fave for good reason. The dimly lit, moody and ornate interiors set the scene for an intimate dining experience, while the menu delivers every single time. Once a dinner-only darling, the Mexican gods have answered our prayers, with lunch now firmly in the mix alongside their iconic evening service. Settle in for seriously mouth-watering eats, the grilled corn is a must, and the cocktails? Just as iconic.
Where: 2460 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach

Mexicali (image supplied)
Mexicali (image supplied)
Mexicali

Always buzzing, Mexicali brings those laidback Cali meets Mexico vibes we just can’t quit. If you’re rolling deep, do yourself a favour and lock in a banquet so you can spend less time deciding and more time focused on the margaritas. Sunset sips on the balcony are a non-negotiable, and don’t even think about leaving without a cheeky snap under the ever-changing lightbox message on the stairs.
Where: Level 1, 2223 Gold Coast Highway, Nobby Beach

Hotel Panchos

Who said the beachside burbs should be having all the fun? Not us, so if you’ve been having a siesta on our humble Hinterland’s worst kept secret and Gold Coast institution, Hotel Panchos, then this is the sign you need to get on out to Mudgeeraba so they can guac your world. With splashes of colour from wall to wall plus enchiladas, margs and tinnies at the ready you’re set for a spec-taco-lar feed.
Where: 581 Springbrook Road, Mudgeeraba

Hail Mary (image supplied)
Hail Mary (image supplied)
Hail Mary

If you haven’t been to Hail Mary, have you even done Burleigh? Tucked down a James Street laneway, this pink-hued gem is easy to miss – but trust, it’s worth finding. She’s not just a pretty face either, dishing up some of the freshest, most flavour-packed Mexican going around. Swing by for lunch or dinner and you’ll quickly see why it’s a local fave.
Where: 6/26 James Street, Burleigh Heads

Frida Sol

Frida Sol is one of those institutions that locals quietly rave about. Looking out over the Gold Coast Highway, it opens into a vibey little taqueria serving up fresh, modern Mexican. Order the prawn tacos, they’re a crowd fave for a reason, or dive into the loaded nachos piled high with all the good stuff. It’s also a winner for families thanks to a top-notch kids menu.
When: 1176 Gold Coast Hwy, Palm Beach

Tommy's Tacos, Currumbin (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

Tommy’s Taco Bar

This vibrant spot has well and truly settled into its Mexican era, serving up a punchy, flavour-packed menu alongside a laidback, come-as-you-are vibe. Expect all the good stuff done right, think crispy fish tacos, slow-cooked pork numbers and quesabirria that’ll have you planning your next visit mid-bite. The bar is stacked with tequila and mezcal, the margaritas go hard, and Taco Tuesday is your weekly excuse sorted.
Where: 140 Duringan Street, Currumbin

Agave Rosa

Fresh, flavour-packed dishes with a cheeky hit of oriental flair (go on, try saying that after a margarita or two) are the name of the game at Agave Rosa. It’s vibrant, a little bit funky and seriously welcoming, with a menu that fuses two absolute fave cuisines in all the right ways. And because no Mexican spot worth its salt skimps on the good stuff, the cocktails and margaritas here absolutely go off.

Our sweet, sweet So-Po. There’s something we just love about Southport, maybe it’s the fact that they’ve got bulk bars and restaurants so hunger never has to enter our vocabulary again. Or maybe it’s how you can get a coffee hit and hit of golf done in half a day and then soak up those Broadwater views for the rest of it – shall we go on?

All we know is that there are so many goodies in this CBD gem we couldn’t list them all or you’d be here all day and we know you’re all about less reading and more doing! (same). Here’s our round-up of local approved must-do’s!

Upping the ante with a little bit of everything, Queen Street Village is just off the Smith St Motorway, so you can pop in for the essentials from gourmet grocer Jones & Co IGA. No time to meal prep? Grab some Asian eats at Wu Kong with peckish plates to keep you going, or a classic pub feed from The Queen’s Arms for your parmy fix. When all that eating has got you zonked, get your caffeine hit at Sens Coffee and pop into DENDY to catch the latest flicks and a moment of peace and quiet.

Now, did we hear you say retail therapy? Enter: Australia Fair. With the big names in fashion all in one spot, along with our biggest vice Kmart, on the store list, say goodbye to your savings, but hello to a fresh new look. For Bakery Treats

No man is left behind at Made With Love who delivers on 100% vegan cakes, pies and pastries– because you know what they say, a doughnut a day keeps the doctor away…or something like that. And why should our vegans not be part of the action?!

Keeping the Euro-bakery vibes rolling is 5B2F Ciabatta, the Southport spin-off from the cult-fave Chirn Park bakehouse, slinging everything from flaky croissants and glossy danishes to ciabatta sandwiches stuffed with all the good things (hello truffle ham and cheese toastie). It’s a grab-and-go carb paradise where sourdough, dreamy pastries and show-stopping cakes are baked fresh daily – basically your daily bread, but make it boujee.

Joining the caffeine crew, but with a twist, is Yellow & Butter. Tucked neatly inside Cloud 9 Car Wash, they’ve officially upgraded your car washing experience with a side of brunch. Our advice is to start with the cheesecake!

Cheek Café serves up wholesome bites, knockout coffee and top-tier banter, all wrapped in a peachy-pink, personality-packed space. While Broadwater Café is a local fave for its stellar brews and arguably the most scenic sip spot in Southport. Coffee with a side of waterfront wow.

If you prefer your coffee topped with cold foam, or paired with a sweet treat on the side (hello, Dubai Mochi Cookie) Milestone should be at the top of your hit list.
