Love Italy? Try this Surfers Paradise newbie

Fast, fresh Italian food for your feasting pleasure.

The European summer has just come to a close which means all 935 of your friends who went over there to frolic in the sunshine must now stop uploading jealousy-inducing snaps to their Instafeed, stat.

What they don’t need to do though, is stop eating incredible European feasts because Surfers Paradise recently became home to a brand new Italian venue and this time, you don’t have to miss a second of the action.

Love Italy is the name of the newbie and it’s taking up space where Latitude 28 once lived, right in the centre of Cavill Mall and serving up fast, fresh Italian eats.

The interior is the epitome of a rustic Italian restaurant with a few modern touches thrown in for good measure. It’s made up of exposed brick, wooden tables, low hanging angular lighting and (our favourite) a section at the back where Italian produce is stacked up on shelves beside a fresh pasta maker that squeezes out the good stuff all day long.

Speaking of the good stuff, the menu is centred around fast, fresh Italian food and we can confirm it is both of those things.

To start, there’s an antipasto section jam-packed with goodies including Funghi Arancini (mushroom risotto balls), Bruschetta and Calamari, so grab a few of those to kick off.

Pasta-wise, we say go for the Chorizo with yes, spicy chorizo, chilli, spinach, semi-dried tomato and EVO and / or (if you’re extra hungry) the Gamberi with prawns, olive oil, chilli, garlic, cherry tomatoes, rocket leaves and Parmesan.

There are about 18 pastas to choose from so you’ll definitely find something to tickle your fancy.

If pizzas are more your Italian style, there are indeed many of those to sample too.

The Mediterranea was a winner with feta, pepperoni, caramelized onion, roasted capsicum, grilled eggplant, black olives and mozzarella.

The Salmone also looked the goods with smoked salmon, olive oil, onion, capers, mozzarella and a drizzle of sour cream.

The cocktail list is filled with all your favourites plus a few Italian Spritz specialties and of course, sangria and Pimms jugs for those scorching summer days we’re soon to be experiencing.

So, if you do indeed love Italy but missed out on an epic European getaway this year, get yourself into Love Italy quick smart.

You’ll be happy you did.

LOCATION: 8 Cavill Mall, Surfers Paradise

They’ve stolen a pizza our hearts!

A food that needs zero introduction – pizza is Italy’s gift to the world that just keeps on giving (to our happiness levels and waistlines, mainly). From office parties to cozy date nights, this god-tier culinary creation is the celebratory cornerstone of gatherings everywhere. We can think of no occasion that isn’t improved by the addition of this beloved Italian staple…. and if there is, we don’t wanna know about it.

A dish steeped in tradition; pizza is divisive as it is delicious. Team crispy, or team chewy and chonky, deep dish style?  Then there’s the question of the toppings – to olive, or not to olive? – and don’t even get us started on pineapple!

Here are 19 of the best, from north to south, so you can dig in without delay (okay maybe just a little delay, molten hot cheese is no joking matter).

Situated right next to the pristine beach, La Calabrese at Ocean is all about traditional Italian ingredients with a modern twist. The pizzas in particular are food-gasmic, and if you don’t concur, then soz but #weir-dough. Anything but your average pizza, a process called ‘biga’ is used to make the dough, and honestly, the ‘yeast’ we can do is divulge why this technique is so special. How about a fior di latte, Italian sausage, ham, mild salami, and oregano? Drool.

Crispy Italian Bar

Here’s a factoid for you – in Italy, the term “bar” stands for more of a watering-hole-meets-cafe hybrid; combining coffee, cocktails, sweet snacks like pastries and quintessential savoury Italian fare… so basically, all the best things. Unintentional micro geography lesson aside, this concept is exactly what owner Riccardo ‘Ricky’ Proserpio set about recreating at Crispy – and now you know this place is fantastic for several reasons, including a top-tier traditional pizza selection. To name just one, the long-standing fave, Margherita, which also comes in a 1/2 metre in size. You won’t be disappointed.
Our pick: Diavola Pizza
Where: 4/1840 Gold Coast Highway, Burleigh Heads

Justin Lane

There’s no denying that Burleigh stalwart, Justin Lane, is the king of pizza. It’s come a long way from its humble beginnings, growing from a wee little pizzeria into a heaving multi-level restaurant, bar and event space. The perfect spot for a casual slice and catch up with your crew (so we assume the cocktails are implied). Pick your cutest stretchy pants, you’re bound to run into at least 35 people that you know. And that’s just on a Monday.
Our pick: Justin’s BBQ Smokehouse
Where: 2/10 James St, Burleigh Heads

Burleigh Pizza is the laid-back, old-school hero locals love. Big, cheesy slices that hit the spot every time, casual service, and a relaxed atmosphere make it perfect for takeaway to the beach or a simple night in. Stone-baked with local ingredients = seriously good pizza.

Balboa Italian

You’ve seen it. We’ve all seen it. The sprawling, modern industrial stunner fronting Palmy’s main drag is a total traffic-stopper, and we’re pleased to confirm that its contents are as epic as the outside. And when it comes to amazing nosh across the board, Balboa Italian sure isn’t pulling any punches. In particular, the pizzas are #goals #IYKYK – and if you don’t – we would suggest remedying this immediately. Take your pick between the selection of red and white sauce bases, or try them all because carbs, shmarbs.
Our pick: Number 1 or Vegan Lovers
Where: 1069 Gold Coast Highway, Palm Beach

Toro’s Pizza

A cosy and super cute spot where Mediterranean and Moroccan vibes collide; Toro’s does pizza with panache. With peach tones for days (#swoon) – the spread at Palmy’s cosy slice slinging haven is quintessentially Italian, but with a healthy dose of tasty modern takes to keep us on our toes. The super relaxed yet chic vibe is just our type, and the pizzas will delight even the most discerning pizza connoisseur. There’s even dessert pizza if that’s your jam… (well, Nutella, technically speaking). Yep, she’s a winner on all fronts.
Our pick: Peri Chicken Pizza
Where:  7/2 Eighth Ave, Palm Beach

Tommy’s Italian

One minute, we’re passing through Currumbin minding our own business, and the next, our mouths immediately commence watering at the mere sight of Tommy’s telltale red and white umbrellas adorning the promenade. And that’s before we’ve even caught wind of the freshly-flamed bites bubbling away within! In only a few short years, this two-storey cutie has become a fixture along the suburb’s seaside strip; serving up multi-million dollar ocean views and mighty fine pizzas to match (and cocktails… because nothing says happiness like a slice of Italy in one hand and a margi in the other). Who can resist? Certainly not us.
Our pick: Caprina Pizza

Get a slice of Burleigh’s new Rustica Italia

It's amore!

Getting your Italian fix of flavours on the regular can be a task in itself these days. Busy schedules and life’s endless little list of chores unvaryingly tend to get in the way of things. Until now, it seems. An Italian eatery that just so happens to coinhabit one of Burleigh’s busiest shopping centres has just opened its doors. It appears running errands and treating yourself to pasta and pizza is now a firm reality. Say hello to Rustica Italia at Treetops Shopping Centre, folks.

Offering seating inside and out, the restaurant’s visual nod to tradition is hinged on the red brick exterior and walls in its outdoor seating area, helping create a feeling of Italy even before your very first bite.

The menu itself is a twist on Italian flavours. While it isn’t designed to be wholly dedicated to the old country, the focus is on aiming to satisfy an Australian palate that will leave diners more than satisfied. All in all, the double-sided menu has more than enough plates for you to have a light bite or to indulge yourself in a much longer lunch. (Which we can certainly get around!)

Like any good Italian eatery, pasta and pizza are the mainstays. But work your way through some of their smaller plates, like their Pork and Veal Meatballs in nonna style sauce or melt in your mouth Mozzarella Sticks, and you may, in fact, not need anything bigger!

You’ll discover seven different style pasta dishes ranging from the more traditional Carbonara to a succulent and irresistible Slow-Cooked Beef Cheek with porcini mushrooms and red wine sauce. All sauces are available with either linguine, pappardelle, or penne pasta, meaning you can effectively choose between 21 different pasta dishes.

No corners have been cut with the pizza side of things either; as a pride of place in the heart of the kitchen, you’ll be able to spot an imported Stefan Ferrari pizza oven all the way from Naples. Although the oven hails from the very home of pizza, the crew here are cooking their pizza in a more universal style and we ain’t complaining!

Rustica Italia pizzas are cooked in a Roman-style oven at a slightly lower heat and for a little longer. Expect to bite your way into an assortment of red and white-based pizzas with delectable inclusions like the Diavolo with spicy hot sauce, pepperoni and mozzarella or a milder signature Rustica with pork, fennel sausage and potatoes with caramelised onions. Oh yes!

Other sections of the menu include hand-rolled gnocchis and slow-roasted meat dishes, a healthy selection of sweets such as Limoncello Ricotta Cake and of course, the little ones are catered for with their own mini pizzas and pasta dishes.

Besides incredible food, the restaurant is serving a great selection of Australian, New Zealand and Italian wines and Italian beers and sparkling waters. When in Rome, right?

Rustica Italia is the easy-going and enjoyable taste of Italy awaiting you at Treetops. And with a daily $20 lunch special of pizza or pasta with a glass of wine or beer, there’s no excuse not to pop by!

Hours: Every day 11 am — 9 pm
Where: Treetops Plaza, 7 Classic Way, Burleigh Waters
