Catfishing (pretending to be something you’re not) rarely ends well for those being caught. But at Purrfect Catch Cafe, the name is exactly what it promises. This new Hope Island spot is reeling in locals for all the right reasons.

This cheeky cafe comes courtesy of James Liu from Hope Island’s Little Spoon Kitchen and Govi Lin from Highpoint Espresso in Ashgrove. They’ve combined their passions for cats, fishing and seriously good coffee with years of hospitality know-how.

“I’ve always loved fishing,” James said, “Govi loves cats, and coffee is something we both enjoy every day. When we started planning the cafe, it felt natural to bring all of those elements together.”

While the cat-meets-fishing combo might raise a few eyebrows at first, the meaning behind Purrfect Catch Cafe runs deeper than a clever name.

“Fishing teaches you patience, you can’t rush it,” James explains. “And coffee is the same. It’s about slowing down and taking the time to enjoy the moment.”

Taking over a space previously occupied by a restaurant lost to fire, the cafe has been given a fresh lease on life. Inside, warm timber and tiled finishes create a modern feel, while the exposed brick exterior adds character and charm. Look closely and you’ll spot playful nods to both cats and fish throughout the space from ceramic cats to fishy friends that make the cafe feel light-hearted and fun for long catch-ups with mates.

And bonus for your furry friends, the cafe is pet-friendly with plenty of seating outdoors.

The menu strikes a happy balance between Australian cafe classics with subtle Asian influences, served across breakfast and lunch.  With the cheeky dish names, it’s half the fun just saying your order out loud!

Tuck into a Crabby Kitty Croissant featuring creamy scrambled eggs, crab meat and a touch of chilli in a buttery croissant.

Sweet Catch Bao will make you meow over soft bao buns filled with your choice of tofu, pork belly or fried honey soy chicken, coleslaw, herbs and chipotle sauce.

Dessert lovers are well catered for too. Scones, cakes and muffins are baked in-house, while other sweet treats are carefully curated to ensure quality bites for those on the go.

There’s also the tiny paws menu for the little ones, serving up Choco Purr Toast, Tiny Purr Pancake Stack and Tiny Paws Nuggets to satisfy the hungriest of kittens.

Coffee comes courtesy of Tim Adams, while the playful Meow-cha menu serves up specialty matcha with boba, strawberry or mango. There’s also a Brown Sugar Boba that’s a must-try, plus smoothies like Tropical Purr-adise — a taste of summer blended with mango, banana, pineapple and dragonfruit.

“For us, a purrfect catch is when everything feels right. Good coffee, good food and good company,” James said.

If there’s one thing the Gold Coast does exceptionally well, it’s keeping our dining scene on its toes. Blink and you’ll miss a new opening, a menu glow-up or a chef-led concept quietly stealing the spotlight.

2025 proved no different, delivering a year packed with ambitious newcomers, crowd-pleasing comebacks and restaurants that gave us very good reasons to book another long lunch.

Oro you ready for a taste of Italy? Much loved Sogno Italiano cousins have done it again with their third venue landing in Broadbeach, serving Italian classics with coastal swagger. Made for long lunches that flirt with dinner, Oro turns hand-made pasta, flame-kissed seafood and show-stopping steaks into pure Euro delight.

Shannon Bennett has turned Byron Bay into a choose-your-own-dining adventure with The Belongil, a $10 million coastal precinct where food, art and community come together. Spanning four distinct venues, it’s a bistro, a fine dining restaurant, a kiosk and secret bar all rolled into one. Grounded in local produce and big creative energy, this is not just a place to eat, it’s a place to belong.

Kuroki Teppanyaki

Kuroki Teppanyaki has landed in Sanctuary Cove, bringing refined flame-licked feasts to the waterfront. Pappa Flock has swooped into Surfers Paradise, landing on Cavill Ave with a whole lot of cluckin’ good energy.The bright, beach-inspired venue features bold orange decor and a mural by local artist Kiel Tillman, instantly claiming landmark status. Known for a loyal fan base, Pappa Flock hand-breads every tender and squeezes thousands of lemons daily for unbeatable lemonade. From the Mighty Box to Loaded Fries and signature Crispy Chicken sandwiches, this new hotspot is set to be Surfers’ go-to for a flockin’ good feed.

Ember

Southport is heating up, and it’s all thanks to Ember by Fire Baby, the fiery new sibling turning up the sizzle on Welch Street. Upstairs, Fire Baby brings cheesy comfort by the slice, but downstairs Ember is where things get smoky and seriously delicious. Think flame-kissed steaks, charcoal-grilled seafood and bold dishes crafted by a powerhouse culinary team. With moody vibes, inventive flavours and that irresistible open-fire aroma, Ember is serving up the kind of heat you’ll happily lean into.

Costa Taco has taken over Burleigh in the best possible way, with its biggest and boldest venue yet. What started as a tiny Palm Beach hole-in-the-wall with epic queues has grown into a full-blown coastal fiesta, and this new flagship is the ultimate taco playground. With 110 seats, colourful vibes, icy margaritas and all your Costa favourites, Burleigh is officially the home of tortilla-fuelled good times.

River House

Summer on the Gold Coast means being by the water and River House in Southport is the ultimate waterside paradise. Perched along the Nerang River with sweeping views, this three-level dining haven is designed for long lunches that drift into sunset cocktails and elegant evening feasts. Led by acclaimed chef Grant Madgwick, expect seasonal Australian produce with European-Asian flavours, all served with a side of riverfront magic.

Flavour is officially in the air at Broadbeach, thanks to Meltemi Mediterrania, a dreamy escape inspired by the Aegean winds it’s named after. From the team behind Xenia Grill, with hatted chef Tapos Singha at the helm, this venue whisks you from Morocco’s spice-laden markets to the glittering cliffs of Greece, all in one sitting. Curved coastal interiors, slow-turned meats and golden-hour cocktails? This is Mediterranean magic, Gold Coast style.

Dolmas Momo

Dumplings are having a momo-ment and Dolma’s Momo Tibetan Kitchen is leading the charge at Harbour Town. What began as a humble night-market stall has blossomed into a soulful eatery dedicated to handmade Tibetan momos, pillowy and packed with comfort. Owners Tenzin Lhakpa and Jerry Fu bring tradition, heart and a mission to support fellow Tibetan migrants, creating food that nourishes more than just appetite. Warm and deeply authentic, this is a dumpling destination you’ll crave again and again.

More Thai landed in Surfers Paradise, with it’s biggest, boldest venue yet. Sun-soaked, nature-inspired interiors, semi-private nooks and a bustling bar set the scene for a Thai feast like no other. Signature dishes like the Crispy Chicken Stir-Fry, Crying Tiger, and Massaman Beef showcase Wendy’s family recipes, while Salt & Pepper Soft-Shell Crab satisfies seafood cravings. Coolangatta’s dining scene just turned up the volume with The House of Bamboo, a Pan-Asian restaurant-meets-disco den where flavour and fun collide. Tucked beneath Griffith Street, this bamboo-clad, neon-lit wonderland is all about big beats and even bigger eats, from Bang Bang Prawns to slow-cooked Beef Rendang. Italia Moto Pizza & Gelato has cruised into Helensvale, revving up the local dining scene with a menu that’s part pit stop, part Italian grand tour. Each pizza celebrates a different region of Italy, while pastas, lasagna and meatballs keep engines running. Finish with a scoop of creamy gelato or a Moto Fuel soda for the ultimate sugar-fuelled lap. Paradise Point welcomes a fiesta of flavour with Street Taco Bar & Taqueria.The creation of Jorge Camargo Erazo, whose Gold Coast kitchen creds includes The Collective and Bam Bam Bakehouse, this vibrant spot blends Mexican heart with Aussie soul. Hidden between a laundromat and a Thai eatery, Kemuri Kitchen is Carrara’s cult izakaya serving up serious flavour. What began as Hiro and Yuki Okubo’s market stall is now a hot spot where pillowy bao buns, smoky binchotan-grilled yakitori and crisp karaage chicken steal the show. Add a sharp sake list curated by Hiro, fortnightly omakase feasts, and hand-pressed bao from Yuki, and you’ve got one of the Coast’s best-kept dining secrets.

Brunswick Heads got a little more culinary magic with moody new nosh spot, River, Wild at Heart. Chef Michael Lee, a Scottish-born former welder turned globe-trotting culinary maestro, brings modern Australian fare that’s both soulful and seasonal. Think wattleseed-crusted venison, charcoal kangaroo carpaccio and desserts that sing winter berries and smoked malt. Hospitality hero Maikel Dabeet brings the Euro art of long lunches to life in a stunning whitewashed setting inspired by the Greek island of love. The dinner-and-a-show era may be fading, but teppanyaki restaurants seem to be keeping the art alive. Sanctuary Cove’s newest venue, Kuroki Teppanyaki, is ready to take centre stage.

Situated in Sanctuary Cove Village, Kuroki Teppanyaki is the latest creation from hospitality duo Kevin Teo and Eddie Cheng, two names already well-seasoned in the local dining scene thanks to venues like The One Food Republic, Kamikaze Teppanyaki Coomera, Superwok Coomera and Bam Bam Korean Fried Chicken & Beer. Basically, if it sizzles, they’ve probably perfected it.

But with Kuroki Teppanyaki, they’ve turned it up a notch… or ten. This is teppanyaki for those who love the theatre but crave refined flavours, high-quality ingredients and chefs who cook with intention, not just flipping wizardry.

Kuroki means ‘black wood’ which to Kevin and Eddie represents depth, warmth and character, the kind of qualities built slowly over time. They have etched those qualities into every wall, floor and ceiling of their new venue.

The interiors, designed by Tracy Ni of Ni Design, are a masterclass in understated drama. Think moody colour palettes, light-reflecting surfaces and textured wood wall panels that nod to the restaurant’s namesake.

With space for 80 guests, Kuroki Teppanyaki offers private dining, cosy indoor seating, and of course, seats around the teppanyaki grill. Every person becomes part of the show where strangers become friends as the smoky aroma fills the air.

At the heart of it all stands Head Chef Eddie Cheng, who commands the grill with the quiet confidence of someone who’s spent more than ten years learning exactly what guests want.

Starting with a contrast to the smoke, Kuroki Teppanyaki’s a la carte menu eases you in with a raw bar of fresh sashimi and oyster platters. From there, the heat slowly rises with pan-fried gyoza, delicate tempura, and yakitori skewers like the indulgent Aburi Salmon.

The entrees maintain the flame. There’s Truffle Edamame (a dangerously addictive upgrade on the classic) and a Charcoal Prawn Tartlet layered with ikura, cucumber, seaweed paste, and wasabi mayo, all tucked into a crisp charcoal-butter shell.

The Kuroki Signature Bento is a treasure chest of the restaurant’s greatest hits with fresh sashimi, Hokkaido scallops, oysters, tempura, agedashi tofu, wagyu cubes, pickles and a plum-infused quail egg. Served with salad, rice and miso, it arrives looking like edible art. There’s also a bite-sized version on the lunch menu.

Now, for the star attraction.

All teppanyaki sets are served with the full spread – a seasonal appetiser platter, vegetables, salad, miso soup, steamed rice and dipping sauces to mix and match as you go. And the meats? Whether it’s chicken thigh, lamb racks, toothfish, or whole squid, everything is on the table, or should we say, on the grill?

And if you don’t know what to order, the banquets are a great place to start.

Throw in cocktails like the crowd-pleasing gin and yuzu Kuroki Cove, and you’ve got yourself just the right amount of sizzle and smooth to put a smile on your grill.

Gone are the days of the old tavern setup (RIP, but thanks for the memories). Now, you’re greeted with a lush new beer garden that’s basically sunshine and happiness rolled into one.

Picture this: picnic tables nestled under market umbrellas, surrounded by greenery and a vibe that screams coastal cool. Add a playground and voilà—you’ve got the ultimate family-friendly destination.

It’s all about alfresco living here, and LBH, is it even a Queensland pub if you can’t sip a cold one while soaking up some rays?

Inside, the revamp leans into the tavern’s coastal retro vibe, with green stripes and rattan setting the scene for a relaxed yet elevated experience.

The bistro has had a zhuzh-up too, and the sports bar is now a sports fan’s dream come true.

We’re talking mega screens showing all the live action, so whether it’s the cricket or footy that gets your heart racing, you won’t miss a beat. And with plenty of seating options, there’s always room for your crew.

Now let’s talk about the menu because, honestly, we’re always thinking about food.

The good news is they’ve kept your fave pub classics, because who doesn’t love a Chicken Parmy or a good Smash Burger?

But they’ve also gone next-level with some seriously drool-worthy additions.

Case in point: the Prawn & Bug Rolls, slathered with chervil mayo and paired with crispy fries. Or how about the Sauteed Prawns with Chorizo, swimming in smoked paprika butter and sherry and served with house-made focaccia for mopping up every last drop?

Then there’s the pièce de résistance—the Salsiccia Pizza, straight out of the wood-fired oven, with mozzarella, pork and fennel sausage, caramelised onion, broccoli, and thyme. It’s basically a party on a plate.

We hope you left room for dessert. The gelato station is a hit with kids and adults alike, and for the grown-ups feeling a little extra, you can even opt for a boozy gelato paired with your favourite liqueur. Genius, right?

If all that wasn’t enough, Hope Island Tavern’s weekly programming seals the deal. Thursday nights mean trivia, Fridays are for tradies with a BBQ and live music from 5pm, and Saturdays bring free kids’ entertainment from 2pm, followed by more live tunes.
