A Gold Coast favourite gets a new lease on life with Sunset on Chevron.
A Gold Coast favourite gets a new lease on life with Sunset on Chevron.

The sun may have set on Sunset Bar & Grill after Marina Mirage’s redevelopment closed the doors but luckily there’s an bright new chapter for the much-loved crew, with Sunset on Chevron now lighting up Chevron Island.
For owners Corinne Klein and Claire Storie, this is a full-circle moment. The pair met more than 20 years ago working side by side at Sunset Bar & Grill, where they built not just a venue, but a fiercely loyal community that stuck with them through rain, hail and shine. When Sunset Bar & Grill was forced to close, walking away simply wasn’t an option.

So instead, they followed the sunset across the water, and invited their community to follow them.
Taking over the former Lean Chef Kitchen site on Chevron Island, Sunset on Chevron brings familiar faces and a fresh coastal energy to one of the Gold Coast’s most community-minded pockets. The corner spot has been gently refreshed with new paint and furniture, keeping the bones locals loved while dialling up that relaxed Gold Coast feel.
“The space reflects everything we love about local cafes. We have created a welcoming spot where locals can settle in and feel right at home.”

And settle here you will. With 55 indoor-outdoor seats, this is a venue made for long lunches that stretch into the afternoon. The menu sits firmly in modern Australian territory, championing fresh, seasonal produce through comforting brunch favourites and lunch dishes that hit just right.
Corinne and Claire also convinced their longtime kitchen wizard to join them. Head chef Andrew Ortlipp brings serious firepower, with 28 years of cheffing experience from Tedder Avenue to Jupiter’s Casino, including 17 years at the helm of the iconic Sunset Bar & Grill, where he steered the kitchen through its golden years.

Start the day with an elevated breakfast classic: Chilli Scrambled Eggs folded through a buttery croissant, finished with shallots, grated parmesan, chilli oil and ripe tomatoes.
Lunch leans into crowd-pleasers, led by the Chicken Katsu Burger – golden panko-crumbed chicken layered with crisp lettuce, kewpie mayo and katsu dipping sauce, served alongside fries.

For something bright and zingy, the Fish Tacos deliver: three soft shells filled with grilled wild barramundi, mango salsa, apple slaw, fresh coriander and a hit of kaffir lime aioli.
Feeling indulgent? The Chilli Prawn, Bug and Prosciutto Pasta is next level with fettuccine tossed with fresh lemon, olive oil, herbs and just enough heat to keep things interesting.
Coffee, as always, remains a passion play. Expect it dialled up with trending sips on the cards, like coconut cold brew topped with pistachio cold foam.

Espresso martinis and margaritas are ready to take over when the sun starts dipping, because what’s a sunset without a cocktail moment?
Catering and functions are also on offer, making it a go-to for island celebrations big and small.

The little Island serving big main character energy.

Chevron Island might be small, but don’t let the size fool you, this pocket rocket of a suburb is punching well above its weight in the eats and vibes department. Nestled between the sparkle of Surfers Paradise and the hustle of Bundall, she’s the kind of place you stumble across once and immediately start planning your next visit (slash move).
We’re talking flaky croissants, jungle-themed cocktail bars, Japanese whisky dens, house-made pasta and some of the friendliest local haunts on the Gold Coast. It’s giving “secret local hotspot” energy, and honestly, we’re kind of obsessed. Whether you’re craving a boujee date night, a carb-loaded brunch, or just a chill spot to sip a spritz and people-watch, Chevron delivers. Here are ten delicious reasons this little island has a big hold on our hearts (and stomachs).
We’re starting with pastry because, honestly, is there any better way to start? DipCro Pastry serves flaky, buttery croissants that dunk (literally- dip + croissant = DipCro). The parties are as delicious as they are gorgeous- and would you expect any less? They’re made by a Le Cordon Bleu graduate. You’ll find Campos coffee on pour and layers of pastry, so good you’ll have a real hard time resisting an order of ‘one of everything. ‘ It’s a carb-lovers wonderland. Warning: you will become a regular.

We haven’t even got to the food yet! A dreamy blend of Southeast Asia and Europe that’ll have your tastebuds doing a happy dance. Pro tip: Come for the food, and stay for the grammable interiors and killer cocktail list.

There’s cool, and then there’s Mr Kojima cool. A long, narrow space with sleek timber details and a wall of Japanese whisky? We’re obsessed. Come lunchtime, you’ll be tucking into bento boxes brimming with crispy prawns, wagyu gyoza, and kingfish carpaccio. Dinner turns things up a notch with a Raw Bar selection–hello beef tataki with red onion, garlic chips and ponzu dressing–and dishes you’ll daydream about for weeks. Sake lovers are also very much looked after here. No surprise there.

Because you only dessert the best!

Are you the kind of person who skips right to the desserts page of a menu? Yep, well, you’re not alone. Taking tactical consideration of what sweet things can and will follow is a clever move by anyone’s standard. Luckily we are spoilt for choice with sweet treats and desserts on the Gold Coast.
Why not seek to fix that sweet craving you have? Here’s our list of the best places on the Gold Coast to grab a dessert, worthy of that extra time on the treadmill!

As if all self-control didn’t already tank at the mere sound of the word Tarte, our reigning pastry queen Chloe Watts is taking over the Gold Coast sweet scene with Tarte in Burleigh and Tarte Beach House in Currumbin #havemercy #we’reweak. Tarte’s trademark goodies taste even better when devoured on the banks of Currumbin’s picture-perfect creek, blowing the bar previously set by our OG dessert darling out of the water.
And just when we thought we had reached peak sweetness, Tarte takes us to new heights with the launch of Tarte Tea Garden in Currumbin, serving up bite-sized pastries, blooms and boujee brews in a high tea paradise. Pinkies at the ready!

Inventive, indulgent, and darn tasty in every department: Bam Bam Bakehouse is the goods — period. The line of sweets and desserts are nothing short of mesmerising (even attracting the likes of Margot Robbie and Matt Preston).
With so many mouthwatering morsels on offer, attempting to choose only a couple of them is a challenging feat (as is not allowing ourselves to immediately to scarf down the lot).

We’ve been giddy over Basque since the gorg new specialty bakehouse-cum-sippery sauntered into Chirn Park in 2023, bearing mind-blowingly good cheesecake and French champagne. Umm, did we just become best friends?! Two of our very favourite modes of celebration under one chic roof – consider us, and our ‘coffee and cake catch up’ standards, spoiled forevermore.
Owners Laura and Zach Guertin devised the dreamy concept in answer to the age-old conundrum, ‘what should I bring?’ – and yeah, we can attest, one taste of Laura’s incredible creations and you’ll forget alll about the box of Favourites.
Luckily for the lot of us, we need not wait for a special occasion to partake in their signature Spanish Cheesecake and Champagne selection, with both available by the slice, and glass – any old time you please to cheese.
