If baking is a love language, then Sunghye “Heya” Yum is practically writing sonnets in sweet treats.
The owner of Yum Bakery has layered her life like a well-constructed Mille-feuille with equal parts adventure, artistry and heart. Before she was piping buttercream and crafting mini masterpieces, Heya worked as a navigator, travelling the globe and collecting inspiration in the form of colours, flavours and delicate design details.
Yum Bakery began as a humble home-based online cake business. For four years, Heya whisked her way into the hearts of hundreds of customers, creating custom cakes that became centrepieces for birthdays, baby showers and “just because” celebrations. But as the orders rose, so did a desire to connect more personally.
So she did what any brave baker would do, she took the cake and ate it too. She opened a physical cafe.
Heya said, “I opened the cafe as a space where customers can walk in and share those moments with us.”
Designed entirely by Heya herself, the space is small but sweet, with indoor seating for six to eight people, outdoor seating for around ten. There’s takeaway available, a restroom on site and an atmosphere that feels like you’ve stumbled into someone’s very stylish kitchen.
But perhaps the most heart-melting detail is Heya’s three-year-old daughter helped redesign the bakery’s logo. Creativity runs in the family!
Because Heya is a busy working mum, she knows the importance of convenience. Yum Bakery’s signature selling point is its ready-to-go celebration cakes. Walk in and choose from a rotating selection of beautifully designed mini cakes and cupcakes. They’re perfect for spontaneous celebrations or casual gatherings that still deserve a big slice of joy.
Yum Bakery is the kind of place where you can decide at 6am that life calls for cake and by 6:05am, you’re walking out with one!
Cakes come in a range of flavours, each as irresistible as the next, from vanilla and chocolate to cookies & cream, biscoff, nutella, salted caramel, lemon curd and raspberry. Whether you’re celebrating with three or 35 people, Heya’s cakes are designed to have everyone coming back for seconds (and thirds!).
Beyond the display cabinet, Yum also serves small-batch baked goods, fresh sandwiches made daily, cupcakes and pastries. Whenever possible, Heya uses free-range eggs and grass-fed butter, a thoughtful choice rooted in her belief that food should feel kind.
If you’re keen to roll up your sleeves, Yum Bakery offers cake decorating classes on the Gold Coast that are as therapeutic as they are tasty. Heya leads small, beginner-friendly workshops where creativity takes centre stage. Licking the bowl is entirely acceptable here.
“I want people to leave not just with a cake, but with a smile,” she said. “Feeling proud of what they made.”
And the proof is in the pudding (or sponge). This year’s Valentine’s Day cakes sold out faster than you can say “be mine.”

Just deli-cious! Giuseppe’s Deli is back and serving proper Italian comfort eats in Mermaid Beach. Look at MOI now! Mad Over Italian has opened its second venue, bringing its much-loved Italian comfort food to Emerald Lakes. Satisfy midweek carb cravings with long lunches by the water and date nights that end in tiramisu. Casual, cosy and completely irresistible, this is one opening Emerald Lakes is already mad about.

The coolest kid on the Coast has officially landed, with Elly’s Gelato now scooping in Currumbin. Created by a crew of beach-loving mates who refused to end a surf without something sweet, this retro-cute gelato bar is pure summer energy. Founded by Coco Loberg and Gareth Fletcher, this Swedish-inspired spot turns nourishing bites into a playful adventure with parmesan jam toast, vibrant watermelon ceviche, and smoothies with cheeky names like Cody Simpson’s Neptune. Terracotta walls, sunken lounges, and cosy textures makes feeling good look (and taste) effortless.

Washing your car just became a whole lot more fun with Yellow & Butter, a brand new cafe tucked inside Cloud 9 Car Wash in Southport. While your car gets squeaky clean, you can demolish rich Basque cheesecakes (all gluten free), buttery brioche buns and cute cloud-inspired drinks. Owned by chef Hayley Namgung, it turns a boring chore into a full-blown treat.

2025 was a big year for the Gold Coast café scene, with new openings popping up in every corner of the city. From locals-first neighbourhood spots to sleek newcomers making waves from day one, there was no shortage of places worth setting your alarm for.

Good Day Coffee gets a fresh pour with Willy’s Beans, as founder Jayson Mathiou brings his Colombian-inspired specialty brews to the much-loved Tugun local. A long-time regular turned owner, Jayson has refreshed the space while keeping its soul intact, from the iconic avo toast to the same feel-good energy that’s made Good Day a community favourite for years.

Burleigh’s Hibiscus Haven has a new crush, and it’s serving Mohr than you’d expect! With a minimalist fit-out, curated tunes and coffee made by Josh Key who’s been in the game long enough to know how much coffee means to us all, it’s the kind of spot that makes you pause before the day kicks off.

Cheek Café has arrived in Southport with big flavours, bold personality and peachy-good vibes. Owner Natalie Yiannakopoulos has poured her heart into every detail, backed by Head Chef Anjelika Arnaiz, whose global experience brings a refined twist to brunch favourites. Upper Coomera rolls out the royal treatment with the arrival of Andonis Cafe & Bar, Brisbane’s beloved brunch empire, now making its Gold Coast debut. It sounds like a holiday fantasy, but it’s really just a standard afternoon on the Gold Coast. How lucky are we?! Sometimes, we do forget it.
Our shoreline is scattered with surf clubs and you could pretty much stumble into any one and score relaxed vibes and a solid feed. But as always, we want the best for you, so we’ve rounded up the very best surf clubs from south to north. Grab a seat, order something cold, and settle in.
With a front row seat to one of Australia’s most iconic surf breaks, Rainbow Bay Surf Club gives world-class surf views, classic pub eats, and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s one of the best spots on the Coast for sunset drinks after an ocean swim on a balmy summer’s afternoon. Salty hair? You’ll fit right in. There’s always a crowd here, so it’s always a good time. This surf club is nothing if not iconic.

Quite literally built out over the ocean, “The Vikings” is one of the most iconic surf-club spots on the entire coastline. The views alone are worth the trip, but their stacked menu and friendly staff seal the deal. You’ll hear everyone recommend this surf club, and for good reason.

Overlooking one of the most famous beaches in Queensland, Burleigh Heads SLSC is where you’ll find old-school surf-club vibes. With sweeping views of the ocean and city skyline, hearty meals, and a prime position beside the iconic Burleigh Hill, it’s a natural choice for pre- or post-day-at-the-beach feeds.

A true neighbourhood favourite since 1954, Nobby’s has entered an exciting new era after joining The Bears Group in late 2025. The partnership brings a refreshed hospitality focus while keeping the relaxed, community-first surf club vibe locals love. Expect updated menus with coastal-inspired flavours, classic club staples and the same welcoming atmosphere, with a major renovation planned for 2027 to further elevate the space.

Mermaid Beach AEME Surf Club remains a humble favourite among locals, striking the perfect balance between relaxed and lively. The club offers a kids’ playroom, heaps of weekly specials (the Tuesday Steak Night and Sunday International Food Night are local legends), plus trivia, members’ promos and plenty of big-screen sport. It’s friendly, consistent, and very easy to make a habit of.

Kurrawa Surf Club is one of the Gold Coast’s largest and most polished surf-club spaces, think sun-filled dining rooms, breathtaking beach views, a ‘something for everyone’ menu including pizzas and Spanish charcoal oven dishes, and a seriously popular brekkie menu. This surf club is fit for every occasion, from post-beach hangs to laid-back lunches to special occasions. They’ve also got live music and big screens to catch all the sports action. Its central location makes it one of the easiest clubs to access without a car.

Not only are you getting all the perks of classic surf club- uninterrupted ocean views and unbeatable atmosphere- you’re also getting fed from an award-winning restaurant. Who says you can’t have it all? You’re getting everything from classic club staples to gourmet salads and asian dishes, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have spacious, light-filled dining spaces and offer one of the best beachfront outlooks in central Surfers.

Sitting beachfront in the heart of Surfers Paradise, this iconic surf club is a welcome escape from the buzz of the strip. Following a major renovation, the space feels fresh and open, with sweeping ocean views that make any meal better. The bistro serves up elevated surf club classics (the Outback Parma still reigns supreme), ice-cold drinks and that easy, friendly atmosphere surf clubs do best. A top spot for sunset sessions, and whale watching if the time is right.
